As well as delving into his son Indigo's favourite song on his new record and a near-miss collaboration with BigXthaPlug, Morgan Wallen has revealed that he has plans to one day release a secret project during his chat with Theo Von on This Past Weekend.
Wallen touched on how he doesn't listen to much country in his free-time, and that he's always had a penchant for house music, with the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper going on to admit that he wants to drop a non-country record under a different name.
The duo got onto the topic after Wallen explained just how many songs he'd ended up removing from his new album, I'm the Problem, “The powers that be will give you a deadline, if you want certain things to happen, like do you want your vinyl to...be ready by when the record's ready, things like that. So they give you a buffer, because they know you're not going to [make it] happen in time. They got a buffer for the buffer, [it was] like an eight-week buffer, I think, that they put on me...We worked really hard on this album, pretty much since tour was over, I've been writing and just recording...We recorded 50 or 51 songs, and cut 13 or 14”.
When Theo asked what his plans are for those remaining tracks, Wallen mused, “Some of the songs were songs that I wrote, some of them weren't, so if I didn't write them then whatever happens to them...it's not up to me anymore. Then if I did [write them], who knows, I might make a side project or something that...has nothing to do with my name. I've always kind of wanted to do that anyway, you know?”
The Sneedville native expanded, “It wouldn't be my voice...I don't know how you would do that. I'm sure there are all kinds of ways to go about it now, these days, but it would not be my name, not be my voice, not be any kind of style of music that I normally do, you know, just to see what happens to it. It might be house music”.
While it's hard to imagine a Morgan Wallen album that isn't grounded in country music, the ‘Love Somebody’ crooner has become synonymous with his ability to blur the lines between genres, with Wallen often incorporating, trap, rock and indie elements. So perhaps a house record isn't as far-fetched as fans might at first assume.
“I don't want it to have my name on it”, Wallen stressed, “I want to see what happens if it just gets put out to the world. Maybe I'll put it on an [Instagram] Story or something of whoever it is...like ‘Dream Jacker’...or whatever the name of the guy is”.
Although it might seem somewhat fanciful, Morgan Wallen emphasised that it's quickly becoming a realistic prospect for him and his team, “Me and my buddies were talking about this topic the other day actually and, I don't know, it might actually happen”.
Wallen concluded, “It wouldn't even be similar to the type of music that I'm doing...it would be nothing even close to what I'm doing now. It would be like...I mean, I like house music a little bit. I listen to it when I'm working out or driving...like melodic stuff...But I feel like a lot of that stuff doesn't necessarily have a lot of words, so maybe like, what if I take a song of mine that didn't make my album, but it's got a story, it's got all these things, would people like that? I don't know”.
It wouldn't be the first time country and house have crossed paths, with Kane Brown and Marshmello's 2024 smash, ‘Miles On It’, highlighting the compatability between these genres, as did Avicii's groundbreaking 2013 link-up with Aloe Blacc, ‘Wake Me Up’. While we hope Morgan Wallen always keeps one foot in the country world, we'd be curious to see what a house crossover from him would sound like.
One thing's for sure, given Morgan Wallen's status as one of the most popular artists in the modern music scene, now that he's expressed his love for the house scene, there will be a long line of hopeful collaborators jostling for a coveted collaboration.
