You know a song has truly gone viral when you can't remember a time in your life when it didn't exist. There is only a time after it.
You can't turn on your phone without seeing someone dancing to it on TikTok and you can't imagine what it's like to wake up in the morning and not have it stuck in your head. You hear bursts of it blasting out of shops every time you pass by and you hear it rattling tinnily out of the headphones of the person sitting next to you on the bus. You stop putting it on after a while, because you don't need to anymore. You'll hear it even if you don't want to. Because it is everywhere! In the best possible way.
In the same way that Shaboozey's 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' and 'Austin' by Dasha became joyfully ubiquitous last year, Chanel Yates' country girl power anthem 'Big Girl Boots' has felt delightfully inescapable this year. We featured her in our 10 Artists You Need To Know feature last month, and it feels like she's fast becoming of those artists everybody knows since.
It's funny to think of your life before these songs were in your life and to try to remember what it felt like the first time you heard them. Luckily for us, the first time we heard 'Big Girl Boots' at Holler has been preserved for posterity to happily transport us back to that very first time we heard it.
When we were invited along to Apple Platoon's Studios in North London back at the end of January, little did we know that we were about to hear one of our favourite earworms for the very first time, and now, ahead of its full release tomorrow, Holler is honoured to be premiering the video for 'Big Girl Boots' recorded live at Platoon that afternoon.
Switching from a gently strummed heartfelt ballad to a hands-in-the-air line dance party anthem about self-empowerment and finding the courage to walk away from a toxic relationship, 'Big Girl Boots' is fast becoming the song of the Spring and the Summer.
"It’s more than just a breakup song, it’s pretty much a mantra to live boldly," explains Chanel Yates about the song. "Whether you’re picking yourself up after a tough breakup, finding the strength to leave a toxic relationship, chasing down a big dream, or just trying to survive the everyday chaos, this is your reminder pull on those big girl boots, be so brave and stand tall (even if you’re as short as me)."
"Playing 'Big Girl Boots' with a live band for the first time was SO much fun," says Chanel Yates. "Definitely keen to bring a pedal steel into future shows now! This song is all about stepping into your power and facing the things that scare you most, so I hope it gives you that extra push of courage & confidence when you need it most!"
"This live, stripped-back version kind of feels like the chill little sister of the original, and I’m so excited for you to hear it!”
