Morgan Wallen has just dropped his blockbuster new music video for ‘I Got Better’, one of the stand-outs from the Sneedville native's fourth studio album, I'm the Problem.
It opens in media res, with a bloodied and bruised Wallen emerging from the flames of a car crash. As he gets to his feet, he looks over his shoulder and spots a woman - the love interest in this tale - who gives him a knowing look, before walking away.
It's a dramatic, fascinating video that works as a standalone piece of art - but we've spotted a few thinly veiled easter eggs that we think might be clues that this ‘I Got Better’ clip is part of a wider narrative, which could ultimately form part of a short film.
Before Wallen took to socials to announce he'd be releasing the official ‘I Got Better’ music video, we were all under the impression that his next video would be for ‘20 Cigarettes’. During his tour-stop in Toronto last month, the ‘Whiskey Glasses’ hitmaker confirmed he'd just finished a music video for that fan-favourite track.
At the end of the ‘I Got Better’ video, we get a hint that ‘20 Cigarettes’ will continue the narrative, with Wallen hopping into his truck and pointedly lighting up a cigarette.
We think these ‘I Got Better’ and ‘20 Cigarettes’ videos are only the tips of the iceberg, and that there might be a full sequence of visuals on the way from the country titan.
Morgan Wallen has been sharing shots of him donning a racing suit and holding a helmet, with the JumboTron introduction to his recent I'm the Problem Tour leaning into this imagery, as well as being spotted hanging with Richard Petty in Nashville this summer.
Wallen has a couple of racing-inspired tracks on I'm the Problem, and we reckon the aforementioned stills are from a video for either ‘Number 3 and Number 7’ with Eric Church or ‘I Ain't Coming Back’ with Post Malone. On the latter, the ‘Chasin’ You’ crooner name-checks Petty while describing an imploding relationship.
We suspect ‘Number 3 and Number 7’ might be the track that's being given a music video, though, with this song telling the story of a young man who combines the speed of Dale Earnhardt Sr. (who drove the ‘No. 3’ car) with Jack Daniel's (No. 7). This dangerous concoction results in a terrifying crash, which the protagonist counts himself lucky to survive, and we think this could therefore be the music video that sets the scene for the explosive opening to ‘I Got Better’.
Traditionally, Wallen has not released a lot of music videos per album cycle, with a few cinematic visuals - such as ‘7 Summers’ - standing out. But he gave us an indication early on that he'd be embracing the visual component to his storytelling for I'm the Problem, when he surprise-released the video for ’Smile’ on New Year's Eve. Perhaps this will ultimately serve as the first chapter of this potential short film.
With Wallen at the top of his game and cementing his status as one of the biggest artists on the planet, it's refreshing to see him challenging himself and exploring novel ways of bringing the narratives in his music to life in a visceral, dynamic way.
If there is indeed a short film en route, we're excited to see what other songs he's chosen to include in this. The likes of ‘Jack and Jill’, ‘Come Back As A Redneck’ and ‘Skoal, Chevy, and Browning’ would all make for great videos, and surely we'll also need some visuals for the brooding, undulating title-track, ‘I'm the Problem’, which Wallen frequently cites as one of his most personal offerings to date.
