Could we have just stumbled across a truly blockbuster - and very unexpected - collaboration between country megastar, Morgan Wallen, and folk titan, Noah Kahan?
As we all know, Wallen is currently in the middle of the rollout for his eagerly anticipated new album, I'm the Problem, with fans desperately attempting to decipher and decode any hints and cryptic clues the Sneedville native sprinkles across his socials.
Last week, the ‘Last Night’ crooner had us all guessing which female artist he has teamed up with for ‘What I Want’, with Tate McRae being our prediction for the unreleased track.
Before that, Morgan Wallen was dropping easter eggs on Saturday Night Live (although this, of course, ended up being overshadowed by his early walk-off and ‘Get me back to God's country’ comment), with Wallen revealing a handful of song-titles from the I'm the Problem tracklist on a TV screen, complete with blanked-out guest-names.
Now, fans are theorising that Post Malone might be the featured artist on Morgan Wallen's latest song-teaser, seemingly titled ‘I Ain't Coming Back’, due to Wallen's quip that he has to “check with the other artist on it” before releasing it. Some have taken this as a nod back to when Wallen infamously shared a rough early demo of ‘I Had Some Help’ at 3am, before having to take it down promptly after.
We thought we'd have an idle skim through ASCAP - the database for all songs and credited writers, including many unreleased tracks - to see if we could find ‘I Ain't Coming Back’ listed anywhere. Often, when it's unreleased, there will be no confirmed ‘Performer’, which can make it tricky to find all the offerings that Morgan Wallen teases.
During his recent discussion for Theo Von's This Past Weekend podcast, we found out that Wallen has been utilising a small, close-knit team of writers for much of I'm the Problem. One of these appears to be Blake Pendergrass, who penned ‘Just in Case’.
When looking through Pendergrass’ other credited songs on ASCAP, alongside ‘Just in Case’, there is one other track that he has seemingly written with Morgan Wallen, ‘Your Turn’.
As we scanned through the writers on ‘Your Turn’, which we have to assume is an unreleased track, we also saw the ever-present Ryan Vojtesak (aka Charlie Handsome) Wallen's long-time producer and - to our surprise - ‘Stick Season’ hitmaker Noah Kahan.
Now, Noah Kahan has been dabbling in the country world in recent years, teaming up with Kelsea Ballerini (‘Cowboys Cry Too’), Zach Bryan (‘Sarah's Place’) and Kacey Musgraves (‘She Calls Me Back’), as well as performing at the 2024 ACM Awards.
Even so, we didn't have a link-up with Morgan Wallen on our bingo-card for 2025. It must be underlined that, at the moment, all we know about ‘Your Turn’ is that it was written by Morgan Wallen, Noah Kahan, Blake Pendergrass and Charlie Handsome.
It's possible Wallen and Kahan joined forces for a writing session years ago, perhaps when the latter was first making his foray into the genre, with ‘Your Turn‘ then being scrapped.
We get the feeling, though, that ‘Your Turn’ might - emphasis on might - be one of the songs from I'm the Problem. With Pendergrass and Handsome involved, it definitely looks like this track was written with Wallen's album in mind, rather than Kahan's.
With just a title to go off, it's difficult to picture what a Morgan Wallen and Noah Kahan fusion would sound like, with the former tending to lean towards contemporary country and occasionally trap, while the latter is grounded in folk and indie-pop.
Having said this, many of the singles we've heard so far from I'm the Problem explore a distinctly more stripped-back, acoustic feel compared to Morgan Wallen's previous records, with the ‘Love Somebody’ singer-songwriter explaining to Theo Von that he was keen to push himself to new sonic territories with this chapter.
The likes of ‘I'm a Little Crazy’ and ‘Smile’ carry the brooding, aching sparseness that underpins Noah Kahan stand-outs such as ‘Orange Juice’ and ‘Strawberry Wine’, so perhaps ‘Your Turn’ follows in a similarly intricate, vulnerable vein to this.
We would also love to hear Wallen and Kahan colliding on a rousing, folk-tinged anthem in the mould of ‘Northern Attitude’, giving each artist a chance to show off their stellar vocals.
Who knows what the fate of ‘Your Turn’ might be, and whether it's set to be a star-studded gem on I'm the Problem or an unreleased track that was cast aside years ago.
We're certainly keeping our fingers crossed it's the former. If this mysterious track is indeed destined for a spot on the new album, with vocals from both artists, then even with potential duets with Tate McRae, Post Malone and HARDY, we think ‘Your Turn’ will be one of the most fascinating collaborations on the project.
