During his recent performance at Clearwater’s Big Rodeo in Clearwater, Nebraska, Gavin Adcock made his stance on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter quite clear.
“That shit ain’t country music and it ain’t ever been country music,” he announced as he told fans there were only three people ahead of him on the Apple Country Music Chart: Morgan Wallen, Parker McCollum and Beyoncé.
“You can tell her we’re coming for her fucking ass,” he shouted out–Jack Daniels in hand–and was met with raucous cheers of unity.
Adcock has since taken to social media to "clear up" his intended message, with a video clip explaining that he just doesn’t “believe that her album should be labelled a country album.”
The shade wasn’t thrown at Beyoncé directly. He noted that he has listened to Beyoncé before and thought her Super Bowl Halftime show was "pretty kick ass back in the day". But as for the icon's genre-defying 2024 release, he opined, “It doesn’t sound country, it doesn’t feel country.”
The ‘Run Your Mouth’ singer went on to justify his opinion by regurgitating everything we’ve already heard before (general themes of injustice) and it begs the question, why are we still talking about it?
Cowboy Carter, it seems, was universally accepted by awarding bodies outside of the country music circuit. However, the country community–and community really is the key word here–have stood strong in their opinion of it and are kind of ignoring it now.
Surely, it's time to focus on the thousands of insanely talented country artists out there and drown out the tired tale.
It’s not country? Great, so show us what is.
