In the first instalment of the Holler Nashville Sessions presented by Montucky Cold Snacks, Flatland Cavalry perform an intricate, enchanting rendition of their new single, ‘Three Car Garage’.
Arriving on Friday (October 11th), ‘Three Car Garage’ is the first release from Flatland Cavalry's forthcoming compilation album, Flatland Forever, which serves as a treasure trove of fan-favourite songs, brand new tracks, unreleased offerings, work-tapes and more.
The composition of the original studio recording of ‘Three Car Garage’ is subtle as it is, but there's an additional layer of intimacy and familiarity achieved through this acoustic rendition for their Holler Nashville Sessions presented by Montucky Cold Snacks.
As is often the case, Cleto's voice is the keystone of the piece, with the bright, wistful strums of the accompanying guitars accentuating the evocative, nostalgic ambience of the track.
It finds Cleto Cordero reflecting on where the kernel of the idea for Flatland Cavalry was formed - in a modest three-car garage in Lubbock, Texas, with Cleto and his buddies hanging out, cracking open a few cold ones and noodling away on their guitars.
Fast forward a decade or so, and Flatland Cavalry have blossomed into one of the most consistent country bands in today's landscape, having dropped their lauded major label debut album last year, Wandering Star. The record has spawned hits such as ‘Last American Summer’ and the Kaitlin Butts-assisted ‘Mornings with You’.
Touching on the inspiration behind ‘Three Car Garage’, Cleto Cordero shared how the song “never got a chance to make it on the Come May album because ultimately it’s just a song about a garage and it didn’t fit the emotional characteristics of the other songs. However, it’s really special and important to me because our whole band got started in a garage. I remember just sitting out there skipping class, writing songs and drinking beer. This one came to me in a moment and the band always loved playing it, and I’m so grateful we finally get a chance to record it”.
Despite being penned during the band's early years’, ‘Three Car Garage’ still feels pertinent to the contemporary country scene. As is highlighted in their new stripped-back version, although on the face of it, this is simply an ode to a man-cave, on a deeper level, the track pivots around the theme of yearning and longing for a simpler time.
This new Holler Nashville Session, presented by Montucky Cold Snacks, was recorded at Music City's much-loved venue, Riverside Revival. The atmospheric, almost reverential setting serves as the perfect backdrop for Flatland Cavalry's toast to the spaces we encounter in life, and the familiarity and sanctuary offered by them.
Flatland Cavalry's new project, Flatland Forever, will be released on November 8th, 2024.
