During a new interview with Holler, Redferrin revealed some of the artists that have helped inspire his genre-blurring style, with Red citing Post Malone as one of his key influences.
The Tennessee singer-songwriter went on to share that he's hoping to record a collaboration with Post Malone, as Posty continues to work on his debut country album.
Redferrin has incorporated the trap-infused, brooding textures he first heard from the ‘Circles’ hitmaker into his own music, “Post Malone is a big influence. The darker undertones of ‘Stuck’ and ‘Jack and Diet Coke’ are definitely influenced by early Post”.
Redferrin has established himself as one of the most exciting new voices in country with popular songs such as ‘Stuck’, ’Miss Summer’ and ‘Jack and Diet Coke’, with both set to feature on his forthcoming EP, Old No. 7. The former motocross rider got his start writing for Florida Georgia Line, withe Red having penned much-loved FGL tracks such as ‘Countryside’, ’New Truck’ and ‘Lil Bit’ with Nelly.
Red went on to explain, “A lot of his music was acoustic - I don't know why people are so surprised he's going country, because ‘Stay’ and some of those earlier songs were just him singing with an acoustic guitar. A lot of that stuff really influenced me early on, when I was first diving into my artistry and not only writing for others”.
‘Stay’ was one of the many stand-outs on Post Malone's acclaimed sophomore album, beerbongs & bentleys, with the bearded crooner eschewing the heavy production and rattling hi-hats of hits such as ‘rockstar’ and ‘Congratulations’ for a sparser, more stripped-back sound for this heartfelt acoustic ballad. The same can undoubtedly be said for fan-favourites such as ’Feeling Whitney’ and ‘I Fall Apart’.
As for a potential collaboration, Redferrin remains optimistic. He underlined his focus is on his solo material, with Red releasing his debut EP, Old No. 7, on February 16. However, should Posty be open to cutting one of his tracks, he'd make an exception.
He emphasised, “I've told everybody I'm not pitching songs until I make a couple count for myself - but if Posty wants one, I'll let that man have one. I've got a few I'm gonna try to get to him. Maybe we can sing them together, or maybe he'll at least sing them, because that would be a bucket list moment. I'm trying to put it out there”.
With the anthemic, 808-fuelled style of tracks such as ‘Stuck’ and ‘Champagne in the Morning’, we'd love to see Redferrin linking up with Post Malone for a track in the near future, with both artists’ versatility sure to combine to produce a fiery earworm.
