Wasted potential. Everyone has it. We all worry about our own. We all look back and wonder what could have been. Knowing where it went wrong and the turns we took that led us down a road we couldn't turn around in. We all wonder how our lives would be different, if only we'd done things differently.
Somewhere inside us there is a little spark that we let die out because we were too busy trying to light a fire somewhere else; who knows what that other spark might have become if only we'd kindled it instead.
For Erin Gibney, wasted potential is both "a blessing and a curse" as she looks back on a relationship after a breakup and wonders what her life would have been like if she'd never started it at all.
"Everything I’ve waited for is behind me in the past," she sings poignantly over a stark piano."All the time I gave you I ain’t getting back."
Written by ErinGibney and Alex Angelo, 'wasted potential' is a moony masterpiece of post-break up reflection as she picks over the debris and deeps every moment of their relationship, wondering how much of herself she lost to it.
"Did I just waste my twenties on a life that ain’t in front of me," she sings, gently restraining herself as she ruminates on everything she's been through. "Oh my God, is everything we built all gone / Cause I went from thinking simple to making every moment existential / ruined my mental onwasted potential."
"I wrote this song after going through my first long-term relationship breakup," Erin Gibney shared about the song. "I remember feeling panicked about how many years of my life I had given to the wrong person. I had been so sure during the relationship that we would work out. When it ended, it felt like my world had come crashing down. This song means so much to me and really helped me work through a lot of complicated feelings during that time. I am so excited to release it into the world, and I hope it helps listeners work through their feelings of heartbreak as well."
Originally from Southington, Connecticut, Erin Gibney moved to Nashville in 2017, to study music business, with an emphasis on music production, at Belmont University. She released several singles and an EP while still in college, then, in 2021 and 2022, four game changing singles produced by Marshall Altman, including the ever-hopeful 'That’s What I’m Looking For,' 'Easy Like That,' 'Single at the Same Time' and Gibney’s personal favorite, 'Naïve,' written by Kelsea Ballerini, Jennifer Denmark, Nicolle Galyon, and Jimmy Robbins.
“My past songs were a little more whimsical,” Gibney notes. “I had this really romantic view on life, and, right now, I don’t have that view, and I think that’s okay. I think it just shows the ebb and flow of life.”
The follow up to previous singles 'not something i’ve told my friends' and her bold reimagining of The Wreckers' 'Leave the Pieces,' 'wasted potential' is just another sign of the bold and fearless artist that Erin Gibney is emerging to be.
“I feel like in the past year, I have refined myself as a person and as an artist,” muses Gibney. “I have grown to really like who I am, and I am no longer scared to share all the good and bad with my fans. I don’t feel as hesitant to talk about my experiences, whether that be with dating, friends, or life in general. It feels like I am now confidently putting music into the world that is a true reflection of me."
