NBC has shared a new commercial starring Team USA figurehead, Simone Biles and narrated by Beyoncé, ahead of airing Biles’ Women's Gymnastics All-Around Finals in Paris.
The cinematic video also features one of the many stand-outs from Beyoncé's debut country album, Cowboy Carter, the Willie Jones-assisted ‘Just For Fun’, as part of the soundtrack.
NBC will show Simone Biles competing in the Paris Olympics at 8pm ET (August 2nd), but the event took place last night, with Biles - spoiler alert - taking the gold medal. This is her second gold in the event, and makes it six in a row for Team USA.
In the NBC commercial, Beyoncé pays tribute to her fellow Texan with her signature gravitas and charisma, “Let’s talk about power - because really, that’s what this story’s about. Physical power - its beauty, its wonder, the way it never stops amazing you. Then there’s spiritual power - the kind that really matters. The power you can’t see, only sense. The power you need in those moments when life goes a little sideways on you. And, of course, lasting power. Only a select few know what it feels like to get to the top and stay there. And, somehow, keep getting better”.
Beyoncé's reference to life going “a little sideways on you” is an apparent nod to the ‘twisties’ that forced Simone Biles to withdraw from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Twisties is a condition which causes the gymnast to feel a sudden disorientation, and leaves them unable to perform the required spins as part of their routine.
The ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ hitmaker goes on to honour how Simone Biles was able to bounce back from that event, and return in full force at the Paris Olympics this summer, “Simone Biles inspires me and I’m pretty sure she inspires you too. Such confidence in her strength, such beauty in her power, such a great lesson in her story”.
Beyoncé goes on to draw on her own experience with heartbreaking setbacks paving the way for colossal triumphs, explaining, “Brilliance - it doesn’t come easy. Gold can be a hell of a journey, and the greatest of all time is willing to put that title on the line every time she walks out there. Take your best shot, world. She’s ready for you”.
It's not the first time Beyoncé has been involved with the Paris Olympic Games, with the 32-time Grammy-winner introducing Team USA at the Opening Ceremony last week.
