What is Thomas Rhett up to?
The ‘Beautiful As You’ singer-songwriter has shared an ‘80s-themed skit, which finds Rhett playing a 9-to-5 worker who's just been told there's a new person starting.
Thomas Rhett, dressed in a retro suit-and-tie with a pair of oversized glasses, begins by answering a brick phone, “Hello and thank you for choosing Small Town Furniture, this is Thomas. How are you doing today?” He then realises it's his boss, with Rhett responding, “How are you doing there, Bobby? Good to hear from you, man!”
However, his tone quickly changes as his manager informs him he's going to have to work with a recent recruit, “A new guy? Bobby, may I remind you that I have been Employee of the Month five months in a row now”. Amusingly, a mocked-up ‘Employee of the Month’ certificate and mug stand proudly on Thomas Rhett's desk.
It's not entirely clear what exactly this sketch is promoting, but given the fact that Thomas Rhett is talking about “a new guy”, we suspect it must be a collaboration.
Thomas Rhett has been releasing revamped versions of tracks from his 2024 album, About a Woman, with ‘Somethin’ Bout a Woman’ receiving a feature from Teddy Swims, before Rhett invited Lanie Gardner to sing on ‘What Could Go Right’ last month.
It looks like the Georgia native has another duet up his sleeve, and we have an inkling Thomas Rhett is planning to continue his Noah Kahan-esque run of reimagined collaborations.
It's not yet clear who the mystery artist on this new track is - or even what the song is. We hoped the ‘80s ambience of the sketch might give us some clues, but no offering from About a Woman stands out as a clear option for a music video with this vibe.
As for the featured artist, we're keeping our fingers crossed it might be Post Malone. The duo have been friends for a while now, and Post confirmed in a recent Billboard interview that he's been writing with Thomas Rhett as he works on his new album.
Alternatively, we're wondering whether Thomas Rhett might be preparing a duet with Ed Sheeran. The latter has been popping up across Nashville of late with the likes of Megan Moroney and Noah Kahan, and even revealed to Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast that he ultimately wants to make a country record.
What's more, a quick skim through the ASCAP Repertory shows that Thomas Rhett has in fact written three songs with Ed Sheeran. The trio of unreleased tracks, ‘Put It in Motion’, ‘These are The Moments’ and ‘You Can't Take This Town Out of Me’, were co-written by Rhett and Sheeran alongside John McDaid and Amy Victoria Wadge.
Thomas Rhett has paid homage to Ed Sheeran on a number of occasions over the years, with Rhett even delivering an acoustic cover of Sheeran's ’Castle on the Hill’ back in 2017.
Another artist some fans have thrown into the mix is Tucker Wetmore, with the ‘Wine into Whiskey’ prodigy heading out on the road with Thomas Rhett on his Better in Boots Tour.
The fact that the tour is named after ‘Boots’ - one of the many highlights from Rhett's stellar About a Woman record - could suggest this is being readied as a focus track.
Could this be the forthcoming collaboration? It remains to be seen - and, of course, it's possible that Thomas Rhett is dropping a new single, rather than updating a song from the album. Either way, we're excited to see what Rhett has up his sleeve.
We felt like About a Woman was one of the most under-appreciated projects of 2024, so we're glad to see TR is giving some of these tracks a second chance at finding the spotlight.
