Gavin Adcock (with Vincet Mason) - ‘Almost Gone’

Release Date: November 22, 2024

Album: Own Worst Enemy

Producers: Will Bundy and Jay Rodgers

Songwriters: Gavin Adcock, Jack Hummel, Vincent Mason, Jack Rauton and Chase McDaniel

The Background:

When Gavin Adcock and Vincent Mason dropped their heartbroken collaboration last fall, we didn't know then that 'Almost Gone' would end up gracing one of the most anticipated releases of 2025.

The result of the two rising country acts and fellow Georgia natives' collaborative efforts appear on Adcock's new studio album, Own Worst Enemy.

The album, which arrived on Aug. 15, is a 24-track collection of all that Adcock has become and all that he has learned on his meteoric rise to country stardom.

"Over the last 4 years I’ve spent my life writing, traveling, and trying to find time to breathe," the artist shared of the release in a post on social media. "It doesn’t always add up on paper like it would seem, but through the happiness, hard times and self destruction I’ve found the best part of my job is letting out music for my fans. I can’t thank y’all enough for sticking with me for this long. I’m the furthest thing from perfect and I don’t ever plan to be."

Here, we're diving into the album's only duet, revisiting the song we've already had the pleasure of learning by heart.

The Sound:

'Almost Gone' is gentle country goodness, the twang-tinged tune a nice balance of rhythm and steel. Opening with a whistle and a pluck, the song is mostly carried on a smattering of delicate strings and the pulse of a consistent beat.

The song becomes more layered with the arrival of the chorus but doesn't wander too far from its intended purpose: to tell the truth as it always was, even if they missed all the signs.

The Meaning:

"She said goodbye, but I ain't heard 'I love you' in a minute
Her tires in the drive, but any minute now they'll be spinning
Ain't a word we can say that'll fix this
We've already said it all
Lord knows that I'm gonna miss this
But she's already almost gone"

In 'Almost Gone', a full picture comes into focus as the two artists realize that the end of a relationship has been in sight for far longer than they had initially thought.

The forlorn song opens with a goodbye, with a former lover saying farewell and driving off into the night, gravel flying. Left to scratch their heads and wonder why, Adcock and Mason begin to put the pieces together. This breakup had actually been a long time coming.

The writing had been on the wall when the "I love you's" had stopped coming, and now, there are no words that could patch things up or make her stay.

"I could chase her right now, catch her on a slowdown
She's already almost gone
So I'ma chase a high now, knock a couple drinks down
I'm already almost gone
There ain't no coming back when the lines get crossed
She's already almost gone
She's already almost gone"

They could choose to chase her, try and flag her down, but she's already almost gone. She has been for a while now.

They attempt to pinpoint when and where it all went wrong, but time and trials have a way of testing the true mettle of any relationship. They could feel the end approaching, they just didn't know it would happen then and there.

There's little they can do now except sit with their own heartache and the knowledge that they likely could have done something to change this outcome. That time, however, has long since passed.

Now, they're downing drinks and drowning their sorrows, waiting until they, too, are almost gone.

"I could chase her right now, catch her on a slowdown
She's already almost gone
So I'ma chase a high now, knock a couple drinks down
I'm already almost gone
There ain't no coming back when the lines get crossed
She's already almost gone
Reading that neon writing on the wall
She's already almost gone
She's already almost gone"

She said goodbye, but I ain't heard "I love you" in a minute
Her tires in the drive, but in a minute now they'll be spinning
Ain't a word we can say that'll fix this
We've already said it all
Lord knows that I'm gonna miss this
But she's already almost gone

I could chase her right now, catch her on a slowdown
She's already almost gone
So I'ma chase a high now, knock a couple drinks down
I'm already almost gone
There ain't no coming back when the lines get crossed
She's already almost gone
She's already almost gone

I been tryna find the reason that it all went south
Almost gone
So I blame it on time and the truth finding its way out
Almost gone
Tied to the tracks of a heartache train
Knew goodbye was coming, I just didn't know the day

So I could chase her right now, catch her on a slowdown
She's already almost gone
So I'ma chase a high now, knock a couple drinks down
I'm already almost gone
There ain't no coming back when the lines get crossed
She's already almost gone
She's already almost gone

She said goodbye, but I ain't heard "I love you" in a minute
Already almost gone
Her tires in the drive, but in a minute now they'll be spinning
Already almost gone
Already almost gone
Already almost gone

I could chase her right now, catch her on a slowdown
She's already almost gone
So I'ma chase a high now, knock a couple drinks down
I'm already almost gone
There ain't no coming back when the lines get crossed
She's already almost gone
Reading that neon writing on the wall
She's already almost gone
She's already almost gone
