Having spent the last couple of weeks on repeat in our Holler offices since it was released in January, Leah Marie Mason’s ‘Holy Water’ now has a suitably dark and moody video to go with it.
The next stop on a line that runs down from Bobbie Gentry through Jimmy Webb and onto Carrie Underwood, it’s a deliciously dark slice of southern gothic country pop where a revenge fantasy becomes a plea to the gods to wash a no good man clean out of her life.
“The devil ain't in Georgia, he's here in Tennessee / He drives an F150 and he takes his whiskey neat,” she sings defiantly, a consummate country diva in the vein of Lee Ann Womack or Martina McBride.
“I want to make it clear that ‘Holy Water’’ is meant to expose a type of person, not a religion,” explains Mason. “Unfortunately, I’ve met a few people throughout the course of my life that have used religion for their own benefit, twisting words to make themselves more powerful. There are people out there who preach about love and compassion and do some of the most hurtful, cruel things behind closed doors. I’m just here to open that door a bit and shed some light on the hypocrisy I, and so many others, have had to witness.”
The North Carolina-born and Nashville-based singer-songwriter has been making waves in Nashville and the country universe beyond since her debut single ‘Far Boy’ in 2021, after she uploaded the song to her TikTok page over a video captioned, “I called my ex to hang out so he could listen to this song I wrote about him,” and it organically exploded with 13 million views.
Recently, she teamed up with the highly established boot brand Tecovas to promote her single ‘Trust Fund Cowboy,’ which went viral on TikTok with 1.2M views.
The video, directed by Preemo, is exclusively premiering at Holler below.
“Bringing the lyrics and music of this story to life was a dream come true", she said about the video. "Preemo and Content Kidz did such a good job with this storyline. They helped me capture the soul of this single and I can’t wait for you all to see it.”
