A new album, a new festival - and a brand new setlist.
In the world of country music, it doesn't get much bigger than Morgan Wallen's performance at his inaugural Sand in My Boots Festival this weekend, across May 16th to 18th.
The Sneedville megastar has timed the release of his eagerly awaited fourth album, I'm the Problem, to coincide with the opening day of the Gulf Shores, Alabama extravaganza.
With Morgan Wallen dropping a 37-song project just two days before his Sand in My Boots set, it's safe to say the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper will have no shortage of options for his setlist. He's already hinted that he hasn't put the running order together just yet during his recent chat with Theo Von, and we imagine he'll be waiting to see which songs fans react most strongly to before finalising his set.
Nonetheless, we have some inklings as to which tracks Wallen might be planning to perform at Sand in My Boots Festival. We feel pretty confident that the lead singles will make their way into the set, ‘I'm the Problem’, ‘Superman’, ‘I Ain't Comin’ Back’, ‘Just in Case’, ‘Love Somebody’, ‘Lies, Lies, Lies’, ‘Smile’ and ‘I'm a Little Crazy’.
Now, we could see Morgan Wallen potentially deciding to drop ‘Smile’ and ‘I'm a Little Crazy‘ due to both being introspective ballads, and Wallen tends to only leave room for a handful of slower, stripped-back tracks for the acoustic portion of his setlist.
Given how the Sand in My Boots Festival line-up - which has been curated by Morgan Wallen himself - features an array of the ‘F150-50’ crooner's close friends and collaborators, Wallen is spoiled for choice when it comes to on-stage link-ups.
We'll start with the bad news - Post Malone won't be coming out during Morgan Wallen's set, because Posty will be in Detroit, Michigan for his Big Ass Stadium Tour on May 18th.
However, given Morgan Wallen and Post Malone's friendship and the fact they just released a new collaboration, ‘I Ain't Comin’ Back’, we imagine Wallen will emerge during Post's Friday night set at Sand in My Boots to perform this track and ‘I Had Some Help’.
Similarly, bearing in mind this is Wallen's festival, we suspect he might be planning to come out each night, with the ‘Love Somebody’ hitmaker having performed ‘Neon Moon’ with Brooks & Dunn - the Saturday night headliners - in the past. B&D even recruited Wallen for the Reboot II version of ‘Neon Moon’ last year.
By the same token, B&D don't have any tour-dates on the books for Sunday, May 18th, so it's possible Morgan Wallen is plotting to bring the legendary duo out during his own set.
Two other artists that some fans had been hoping might be making the trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama this week, will - we're sorry to say - almost definitely not be appearing. Eric Church guests on ‘Number 3 and Number 7’ from Morgan Wallen's new album, while Tate McRae appears on Wallen's first ever female duet, ‘What I Want’.
Church will be on the other side of The Pond headlining Highways Festival 2025 across May 16th and 17th, and unless he flies out that same evening or early the next morning, he won't be in town for Sand in My Boots Festival. Given The Chief isn't on the bill, this feels like too far out of his way to play one song - but fear not, we're sure the two good buddies will join up elsewhere on Wallen's 2025 tour.
We're probably more likely to get a bizarre Eric Church and Tate McRae joint performance, because McRae is also across the Atlantic for her Miss Possessive Tour. The pop phenom will be performing in Dublin, Ireland on May 16th and 17th, before heading to Birmingham for May 19th. Sadly, this is Birmingham, UK, not Birmingham, Alabama, which is a short (ish) drive away from Gulf Shores.
With Tate McRae being one of the biggest names in the contemporary pop scene, her collaboration with Morgan Wallen, ‘What I Want’, is already one of the most buzzed-about songs on the record, and we suspect it may well be the most streamed over the first few days. Wallen may decide to debut it at Sand in My Boots with another artist singing McRae's part, such as his label-mate Lauren Watkins or 2025 tour-mate Ella Langley. The latter could be a good shout, with the duo potentially rehearsing for their shared tour-dates, but we have a feeling Wallen might hold off on performing ‘What I Want’ until he can team up with McRae on-stage, and in turn amplify the excitement around this joint offering.
We'd be very surprised if ERNEST, HARDY and Bailey Zimmerman don't come out with Morgan Wallen. ERN and HARDY are two of Wallen's best friends, and are all over I'm the Problem, with the duo co-writing a plethora of tracks and singing on two of them.
Usually, Morgan Wallen and ERNEST will combine for either ‘Flower Shops’ or ‘Cowgirls’, while Wallen and HARDY join forces for ‘He Went to Jared’. But with ERN and HARDY featuring on two new tracks from I'm the Problem, ‘The Dealer’ and ‘Come Back As A Redneck’, we're expecting them to deliver live debuts of these.
Bailey Zimmerman may not be a featured artist on I'm the Problem, but he's good buds with Morgan Wallen, having toured with him across the last couple of years. The duo have teamed up on-stage to perform ‘I Deserve a Drink’ and ‘Cowgirls’ in the past, so we're curious to see what song - if any - they'll decide to serve up this time around.
It might feel a little weird for Wallen to perform ‘Cowgirls’ with Zimmerman, when ERNEST, the featured artist, is there, while ‘I Deserve a Drink’ is a deep cut from One Thing At A Time that will probably get the elbow to make room for newer tracks. We think the rowdy, down-home anthem, ‘Don't We’ - one of the many previously teased offerings from I'm the Problem - could be a good option for this duo.
Elsewhere on the stacked Sand in My Boots Festival 2025 line-up, you'll find rap mavericks, Moneybagg Yo and BigXthaPlug. Moneybagg recruited Wallen for ‘WHISKEY WHISKEY’ last year, and although they walked out together in Minneapolis last year, they've never performed this live-wire, trap-infused anthem before.
Could Sand in My Boots be the right time? With the hype around this song having faded and Wallen walking out to the electric hit, we feel like he might just bring Moneybagg along for this pre-show routine, rather than link up on-stage - but you never know.
BigXthaPlug's involvement is a little trickier to gauge. The duo have seemingly been buddies for a while now, with Wallen attending one of BigX's shows and the Texas rapper then name-checking Wallen as one of the artists featured on his new country EP.
However, in his 2025 interview with Theo Von, Morgan Wallen appeared a little irked at BigXthaPlug for not finishing a verse in time for it to go on ‘Miami’, a Keith Whitley interpolation from I'm the Problem. It therefore doesn't seem like they've found time to work on any new music together, and we think BigX might not have a part to play in Wallen's Sand in My Boots Festiavl 2025 headline set as a result. Unless, of course, BigX has since finished his verse, and we get a live debut of this second version of ’Miami‘ in Gulf Shores. Now that would be cool.
Another rapper on the Sand in My Boots Festival 2025 bill that Morgan Wallen has spent time with in the past is Wiz Khalifa. Wiz came out during Wallen's 2023 Pittsburgh set, and we have a suspicion they might have something up their sleeve this weekend.
Part of the fun, of course, is that at the end of the day, we simply don't know what Morgan Wallen has in store for us as we gear up for a truly momentous occasion. Who will he walk out with, who will he bring out and what will he perform? We suspect we'll know more once I'm the Problem is out in the world on Friday (May 16th) - but for now, we'll keep counting down the days until this blockbuster weekend.
