Post Malone has - at long last - released his Luke Combs collaboration, ’Guy For That’, the third star-studded track to arrive from Posty's hotly anticipated debut country album, F-1Trillion, which drops in a few short weeks, on August 16th.
In the lead-up to Post Malone releasing ‘I Had Some Help’ with Morgan Wallen, there were some concerns that the drawn-out months of unreleased social media teasers, snippets and demos might leave listeners feeling a little flat when the track dropped in full. Given the first clip of ‘Guy For That’ was shared back in February, some harboured the same doubts about Posty's keenly awaited Luke duet.
With ‘I Had Some Help’ having spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, those worries were clearly misplaced, and now ‘Guy For That’ has arrived to a euphoric response, Posty has once and for all allayed any fears about his rollout strategy.
Post Malone's vocals carry their familiar electronic, reverb-laden tint and infectious vibrato, while Luke Combs’ commanding gravitas injects an extra boost halfway through the track. It's all hook, no filler, with Posty not even seeing a need for a traditional outro, in much the same fashion as ‘Pour Me a Drink’ with Blake Shelton.
If ‘I Had Some Help’ was the black coffee, potent with a slight sharpness and seemingly ubiquitous, and ‘Pour Me a Drink’ was a cappuccino, smooth, perhaps a little frothy and considered middle-of-the-road by some, but irresistible nonetheless, then ‘Guy For That’ is the espresso in Posty's F-1Trillion cafe - a sugary, caffeinated bolt of energy, where the only criticism is that it ends a tad too soon.
Regardless, ‘Guy For That’ is yet another example of why Post Malone is taking the country music world by storm. Of course, he's got the addictive melodies, the distinctive vocals and the dizzying array of special guests - those were always a given.
What's most impressive - and most enchanting - about Post Malone is just how much fun he seems to be having in his country era. In every photograph of him performing with a country artist, he's grinning from ear to ear as he watches them do their thing.
‘Guy For That’ is technically a heartbreak song, just like ’I Had Some Help’ and ‘Pour Me a Drink’, but it too is laced with such verve and jubilance that you forget they're supposed to be mournful. It ensures the momentum is sky-high ahead of F-1Trillion - and, in particular, his mysterious second Luke Combs collaboration. At this rate, you can't help but feel he's going to go 18 for 18 come August 16th.
