Post Malone has single handedly taken over the country genre since he began teasing that his debut country record was on its way.
With blockbuster singles that included 'I Had Some Help' with Morgan Wallen, 'Pour Me A Drink' with Blake Shelton and 'Guy For That' alongside Luke Combs, the stage was set for the highly-anticipated release of F-1 Trillion.
Already notching a hefty 18 songs, the standard version of the project includes features with the likes of Sierra Ferrell, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson and a running list of the who's who in the genre. However, in the middle of the album's release day on August 16, Malone shocked fans yet again with the news that he had an expanded version of the album ready to roll.
One of the nine songs from F-1 Trillion - Long Bed,
The project, in its entirety, isn't really limited or confined to one specific style or subgenre, but rather a perfect mixture of all the things that make country music what it is.
On 'Who Needs You,' we find Post Malone tipping his hat to the way of Texas Swing, with the pedal steel and fiddle taking center stage for the Texas two step.
Written by Malone alongside Blake Pendergrass, Chandler Walters, Charlie Handsome, Louis Bell & one of the genres biggest hitmakers, ERNEST, it's a sultry vocal performance from the genre-bending entertainer, providing visions of him on stage in a dusty ballroom with a right backing band at his beck and call.
“Give me a night, a bar and a bottle to sip on
A neon light and a stool to sit on
And I'll be on my way straight to regret
And I don't wanna see the sunshine anymore
I'll be on the dark side right behind them same old swingin' doors”
Post Malone paints us the perfect picture for a glorious night full of regret, consisting of a dingy, neon-lit bar and a nice, full bottle of whatever to sip from, that's all the requirements to wallow a night away.
Quickly realizing that something has happened to get Posty down in the dumps, he shares that, until further notice, he will be planted right there in that bar, avoiding all signs of life while he tries to mend what we can only assume is his broken heart.
“Who need you when I can break myself in two?
I can make my grey skies blue if that's what I aim to do
When I tear it all to pieces, I don't need no blue-eyed reason
Baby, who needs you when I can break myself in two?”
On the contrary, we discover that Malone is saddled up to the bar drinking away his problems because, rather than needing someone else to do it, he's perfectly capable of breaking his own heart. Similarly, he has the power to turn things around for himself, too, but that's for another day.
In the clever third line of the chorus, he explains that he doesn't need love or a pretty girl to be the reason he tears his world apart. He can manage that just fine on his own.
“I don't need your suitcase and a car in the fast lane
To turn this bottle into where Jack ain't
Me, myself & I can get the job done fine
So don't flatter yourself anymore
I can make me lonelier than you can if we're keepin' score”
While most people go and drown their sorrows over their beloved packing up, speeding off and leaving them in the dust, Post Malone reiterates that he can take care of that for himself.
After all, if she thinks that he's the reason for his sadness and loneliness, she's got another thing coming.
"If I can change this cloudy weather
Then I can put me back together
Baby, who needs you when I can break myself in two?
Baby, who needs you when I can break myself in two?"
Post Malone has not spoken about 'Who Needs You’ specifically just yet, but the New York native has touched more broadly on how welcoming the country music community has been to him since he announced his foray into the genre.
In an interview with Anthony Mason for CBS in Nashville, the ‘Chemical’ singer-songwriter shared, “Everyone here was so accepting and kind.” When Mason described this as a testament to Post Malone's genial, warm character, Posty immediately responded with an endearing dismissal, “I disagree. I think it's a testament to them.”
