The Background:

For the last six months or so, the name at the top of everyone's Country Artists to Watch lists is none other than Hudson Westbrook.

Really kicking off with his viral '5 to 9' last fall, the Texas up-and-comer has followed it up with strength after strength, taking shape as his debut, self-titled EP, and now bleeding into what will eventually become his debut record.

Just in the first quarter of 2025, Westbrook has gifted fans with one instant hit after another, including the emotive 'Mine Tomorrow' and sensual https://holler.country/news/general/dressed-down-by-hudson-westbrook-lyrics-and-meaning/'Dressed Down.' Now, the young entertainer offers his newest taste of what he's got up his sleeve with the mournful 'Weatherman.'

The Sound:

Written alongside Lukas Scott, Neil Medley, Reid Haughton & Beau Bailey, Westbrook's newest offering offers up the sound that has quickly become his signature calling card, seamlessly blending neotraditional and red dirt country with a sleek mainstream sheen.

The rough-around-the-edges singer-songwriter, who has often been compared vocally to fellow Texan Parker McCollum, shows off his ragged vocals along the pain-evoking track which looks at the remnants of a broken relationship as the narrator tries to find anyone to blame for the mess.

The Meaning:

“She brought the rain
Rain brought the pain
Pain brought the bottle I was sippin' on straight
Ain't on you, but you caught the blame
Hey weatherman
Hey weatherman"

Signaling back to classic '90s songs of years gone by, 'Weatherman' opens with an a capella run through of the chorus.

A clever use of wordplay, the last word of the first two lines begins the next line, creating an infectious chain of event effect that essentially results in Westbrook blaming the girl who broke his heart for the poor weather and for his questionable drinking habits.

As will be a theme throughout most of the song, the narrator directs this monologue towards one person who he's hoping to find solace in: his local weatherman.

“Woke up this morning in boots and jeans
Living room lit by the TV screen
Channel five news, it was you and me
Hey weatherman

Said it was gonna be a bluebird day
So nice it'll take the blues away
Look outside, it was nothing by grey
Hey weatherman”

Waking up still dressed in his living room from what we can only imagine was a long night before, the narrator sees his trusty pal, the weatherman, on TV, who explains that the weather that day is expected to be just about perfect.

Promising blue skies, lots of sun and only good vibes, the weatherman may need to check his forecast again, because when Westbrook looks outside, all he sees is gloomy grey, which may just be a reflection of what's going on inside his head, too.

"Ain't your fault, I ain't mad at you
You're just doing what you're paid to do
Couldn't forecast what she was gonna do
Hey weatherman"

After taking us through the chorus again, Westbrook uses the second verse to speak directly to the weatherman and underline that he's not trying to blame the poor meteorologist for the unfortunate events happening in his life of recent.

In fact, the narrator throws the weatherman a bone, noting that no one ever could've foreseen Westbrook's ex lover leaving the way she did.

"She brought the rain
Rain brought the pain
Pain brought the bottle I was sippin' on straight
Ain't on you, but you caught the blame
Hey weatherman
Hey weatherman
You said the sun would fill up the sky
But the sky hit the ground when she said goodbye
Was countin' on you
You were wrong this time
Hey weatherman
Hey weatherman"

What has Westbrook said about 'Weatherman'?

Ahead of the release of 'Weatherman,' Holler caught up with Westbrook to talk all things new music and what we can expect from his forthcoming debut record.

During the conversation, the young crooner admitted that this newest tune is a personal favorite in his growing collection.

"I drop my favorite song I've ever written [this] month, and it's gonna build into everything," he explained with a grin. ""It's called 'Weatherman' and It's so different, I love it."

While 'Weatherman' may feel like an outlier from his discography so far, we can certainly be safe knowing that it's in good hands, though. Westbrook continued, "I have my sound sonically figured out, I don't think I'll ever change my sound. I think it'll be what I sing about that changes, with time."

As we await for breadcrumbs and the news of when the highly-anticipated project may be making landfall, Westbrook made sure to let us know that it'll be well worth the wait, saying, "We don't know if it'll be 19, 17, 16, but you can expect a lot of songs, and you can expect, I hope, good songs. We've been working hard on them."
