It goes without saying that Morgan Wallen is no stranger to TikTok popularity, with the ‘I Had Some Help‘ hitmaker having kickstarted a slew of viral trends in the past few weeks alone.
Wallen was one of the first country artists to embrace TikTok, with ‘7 Summers’ famously spreading like wildfire across the social media platform when he teased a clip back in 2020.
More recently, courtesy of I'm the Problem, a host of the Sneedville megastar's new tracks have instigated hugely popular trends on TikTok, most notably ‘TN’, with users creating videos of their own break-up experiences and replacing Morgan Wallen's US state abbreviations. There have also been an array of clips of this track featuring Megan Moroney, with fans convinced the song was penned about her.
There have also been a flurry of posts pivoting around ‘What I Want’ with Tate McRae, ‘I Ain't Comin’ Back’ with Post Malone, ‘Dark Til Daylight’ and, more recently, ‘20 Cigarettes’. The latter two have just broken into Spotify's Top 50 Viral Songs USA chart.
However, there's another Morgan Wallen song that has been gaining a surge in attention in recent weeks - and, interestingly, it's not one from his new album, I'm the Problem.
His now-fabled cover of Jason Isbell's ‘Cover Me Up’ has been surging in popularity on the platform, with users creating sweet, heartwarming montages celebrating “the simple life”.
What's more, it's not the studio version of ‘Cover Me Up’, rather, it's an acoustic rendition that's being used for this stirring videos. It's understandable why this sparser, stripped-back take has been chosen, with the focus being placed on Morgan Wallen's gravelly, charismatic vocals, and the DIY, pared-down feel of the composition reflecting the beautiful simplicity being toasted in these TikTok clips.
Videos include vignettes of bucolic shots of farmyard animals roaming in the grass, stunning sunsets sinking into the horizon, a row of boats bobbing happily in a harbour, a tempting cup of coffee sat against the backdrop of breaking dawn and more.
Morgan Wallen's performance of ‘Cover Me Up’ has long been one of the stand-out moments in the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper's live shows, with Wallen removing the histrionic production and dazzling lights, and replacing them with a sea of phone-lights.
It's a breathtaking moment in his set, with Wallen's yearning vocals drifting peacefully out into the crowd, with virtually every member of the audience singing right back to him.
Given some of the more disturbing and distressing news that can filter through to us via social media, these serene, joyful video collections are a welcome dose of soothing content.
It's apt that ‘Cover Me Up’, which follows a protagonist who has overcome his struggles with alcohol and wild side with the help of his partner, who has extinguished his burning, self-destructive tendencies. As a result, he looks hopefully towards a simple and modest - yet loving and faith-filled - life spent with her at the centre.
While these videos do not generally follow this specific trajectory, they do capture the spirit which underpins ’Cover Me Up’. It's an outlook that hints at stepping back from the treadmill of the Western world and removing any sense of craving for more, and instead, simply revelling in the oft-overlooked wonders of everyday living.
It's a lovely sentiment, and whether or not this was ever the intention behind either Isbell or Wallen's version of ‘Cover Me Up’, this is a TikTok trend we can certainly get behind.
