ROLE MODEL - 'Sally, When The Wine Runs Out'

Release Date: February 14th, 2025

Album: Kansas Anymore (The Longest Goodbye)

Songwriters: Annika Bennett, Harrison Whitford, Noah Conrad & Tucker Pilsbury

Producer: Noah Conrad & Harrison Whitford

The Background:

The world of country and pop have been ever so subtly merging over the last few years, with crossover artists ranging from country megastars like Morgan Wallen and Zach Bryan, to Post Malone, Beyoncé and Sabrina Carpenter.

Somewhere in that cross-section of country-pop bliss lies ROLE MODEL.

Having gone through a few stage names since his debut in 2016–including Tucker and Dillis–the artist born Tucker Pillsbury has been an underground sensation for years, but one little song going viral on TikTok in February 2025 has put him squarely in the mainstream.

After teasing what would be the iconic bridge of 'Sally, When The Wine Runs Out' on TikTok shortly after the 2025 Super Bowl, ROLE MODEL announced that the deluxe version of his sophomore record, Kansas Anymore, would be dropping on February 14 and would include the quick hit in its track list, as well as other country-leaning tunes like 'Some Protector,' 'The Longest Goodbye' and 'Old Recliners.'

Notching more than 7 million streams on Spotify alone in its first two weeks, as well as over 80,000 videos on TikTok, 'Sally, When The Wine Runs Out' has all but become the song of the summer.

The Sound:

Boasting masterful production from Noah Conrad & Harrison Whitford, both of whom all contributed to the song's lyrics, 'Sally, When The Wine Runs Out' is full of bright, upbeat instrumentation that, for lack of a better description, sounds like summer.

With acoustic guitars, twangy electrics, a bumping bass line and a simple drum beat all playing together, it pulls on influences from '70s pop and indie pop.

In addition to Conrad and Whitford, Annika Bennett and Pilsbury also had a hand in penning 'Sally, When The Wine Runs Out.'

The Meaning:

Well
I met Sally at a late-night dive bar
She don't dance, but she downs her drinks
Heard through a friend she's a born-again wildcard
She was telling me wild things
Oh, she was telling me wild things

Lives down the street, past the 7-Eleven
Just close enough that I spent the night
She grabbed my hand at the intersection
I spilled my guts at the red light"

The song opens with our narrator recalling his first meeting with the song's namesake, Sally.

Having met at a random dive bar, where she was happily partaking in more than her fair share of libations, our narrator had been told that Sally was a bit of a wild child with a history of being a bit off the cuff and a rolling stone.

Fast forward to a bit later on that first night, our protagonist ends up staying the night with Sally, setting us up for a rollercoaster for the next three minutes or so.

Sally
That feeling's coming around
Please don't go falling in love
Then disappear when the wine runs out
Sally
I'll buy a couple of rounds
Don't let me think I'm еnough
Then disappear when the wine runs out

Singing directly to Sally, the singer begs of her not to be like those girls that fall in love with whoever they're talking to when drunk or with whoever is buying the drinks.

Offering to buy them both a couple of rounds, we can tell that our speaker has some hesitations as he asks her to keep the expectations realistic and not to just leave him hanging right after last call.

Well, I open up while she's flipping through pages
Getting lonely as the days get dark
If you're bored and your mind starts changing
Maybe just give me a head start

And I, I see the glass in your eyes
Just tryna keep it alive
For crying out loud

A bit further down the line, Sally and our narrator seem to be trying to make it work. Yet, as he's opening up to her and trying to forge a relationship, he's met with nothing in return from her.

He can feel her disengaging and becoming disinterested, and all he's asking for is a little bit of a heads up so he can save whatever remains of his heart.

"Aw, shit, here we go again, I'm falling headfirst
Ankles hit the two-step, Sally makes my head hurt
Heard through the grapevine, she can be a diva
Cold like Minnesota, hotter than a fever"

As we get to the bridge, we're starting to think that maybe as much as Sally has a habit of breaking hearts, our narrator also has a habit of falling in love at the drop of a hat.

Yet, no matter how hard her tries, he can't keep himself away from her.

"Sally
That feeling's coming around
Please don't go falling in love
Then disappear when the wine runs out
Sally
I'll buy a couple of rounds
Don't let me think I'm enough
Then disappear when the wine runs out"
