BigXthaPlug & Luke Combs - ‘Pray Hard’

Official Release Date: August 22nd, 2025

Album: I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY

Songwriters: Dave Cohen, Jon Robert Hall, BandPlay, Luke Combs, Mark Nilan Jr., Nick Monson & BigXthaPlug

Producers: Dave Cohen, Mark Nilan Jr., Nick Monson, BandPlay & Tony Coles

The Background:

From the first moment Texas rapper BigXthaPlug started teasing a foray into the country music space, he cited Luke Combs as one of his biggest fans. Combs has been supporting the ‘Take Care’ hitmaker from the get-go, and as a result, it was unsurprising - but still immensely exciting - when the country titan was confirmed as a guest artist on BigX's blockbuster 2025 studio album, I Hope You're Happy.

The ‘Beautiful Crazy’ singer-songwriter takes the helm for the rousing, choir-back hook, while BigX enters the fray for some hard-hitting, heart-on-his-sleeve verses, with ’Pray Hard’ one of the most vulnerable, introspective tracks on I Hope You're Happy.

The Sound:

What's striking about I Hope You're Happy is how BigXthaPlug really brings out the best in his collaborators. Darius Rucker sounds fantastic and Stapleton-esque on the soulful title-track, Tucker Wetmore delivers one of his most impressive vocals to date on ‘About You’, and here, Luke Combs - who is already recognised as having one of the greatest voices in country music - takes it up another notch.

It makes us wonder why we've never heard Luke Combs with a choir on a song before, with the celestial, galvanising backing vocals and the bright, guitar-driven instrumental combining with Combs’ charismatic, vibrant rasp for an absolute heater.

The Meaning:

“A little bit of magic
A little bit of smoke up in these lungs
Runnin' from the Devil with my guitar
Angel on my shoulder got me this far
Had to make it happen
Go and touch the sky or die too young
But I don't take the credit for the good part
Blame it on my mama 'cause she prayed hard”

Throughout the track, the protagonist reflects on how he could have gone down a much darker path when he was younger, but he thankfully ended up opting for a life lived with God on his side. Luke Combs doesn't take any credit for this transformation, though, as he cites his mother's prayers as the reason for his success.

“Ayy, I really made it
I'm still thankin' the Lord 'cause we was really out here hatin'
All we knew was up the score
We was tryna figure it out, but, shit, the Devil kept us bored
Like should we go apply for jobs or go hit licks and rob these stores?
Still a teen, but I was growin', I learned my lessons
Mom and Pops tried they best, but I was livin' young and reckless
Coulda made it out in sports but in them streets was too invested
Took that cell for me to get it and that changed my life forever
It's like I felt I needed”

BigXthaPlug looks back at some of the more ‘reckless’ and unruly behaviour he carried out in his past, before showcasing his maturity by acknowledging how his parents did their best to help him. He also references the common idea that the Devil has an easier time of breaking people down when they're ‘bored’ and susceptible to temptation.

“Shit is crazy, things changed, but it's startin' to feel the same
The only difference is the money and this unwanted-ass fame
But my family lookin' good, got most my people out the hood
And plus, my kids is more than good, so, shit, I really can't complain
We can go back in them stores and buy the stuff we couldn't afford
'Cause now I'm headlinin' these tours, it's like this music shit was for me
I get paid to tell my story, plus my fans truly adore me
I like this lane, I think it's for me, I just know my mama prayed for”

Despite admitting that he doesn't love the fame and unsolicited attention that his emergence in the spotlight has brought, BigX expresses his gratitude for what he's been able to achieve. Again, he doesn't puff out his chest and exemplify the braggadocio of many rap songs, rather, he lovingly tips his cap to his mother's faith.
