There are a few songs in Riley Green's repertoire that have become staples lately; and we're bound to get reacquainted with some of them when the star drops his upcoming album, Don't Mind If I Do, on Oct. 18. Previously released – and now-well-loved – offerings like 'Worst Way', 'Jesus Saves' and 'Way Out Here' are all set to make appearances on the project.
However, one of these classics trumps them all. 'Pick A Place', one of the artist's most endearing ballads to date, will accompany the lot, ready to enrapture even more listeners with its simple yet swoon-inducing message.
'Pick A Place' is a stripped-down acoustic number. The entire song a hushed sweep of rhythm and steel, sultry strings and a pulsating beat comprise the easy but effective tune. The rough bristle of Green's graveled croon is the only thing that permeates the alluring composition, beckoning listeners to finger a map and figure out the rest later.
"We can catch a Southwest flight down there to Florida
Wade out in that blue water
We can take my old Toyota to Atlanta
Catch the Braves playin' the Marlins"
Riley Green is going places, or at least, he's determined to in 'Pick A Place'. In the song, he suggests various locals that involve everything from splashing around in Floridian waters to watching baseball under Atlanta lights.
Elsewhere, he goes on to propose, "We can bounce from bar to bar down there on Broadway / And both sing out of tune / We can find a cheap hotel outside of Dallas / And never leave the room."
In 'Pick A Place', Green isn't fishing for a vacation. Instead, he's asking the object of his affections to choose a spot where their attraction can blossom into something more.
It doesn't really matter the physical place – he sings, "To tell the truth, girl, I don't really care / I'd love the chance to take you anywhere" – he just needs to be where heartache isn't waiting to catch up with him.
"Just pick a place where hearts don't break, and I'll open up a tab
Somewhere we don't know a soul, and we can wash away the past
Somewhere it don't hurt
Girl, just say the word and I'm on my way
All you gotta do is pick a place"
While the song doesn't explicitly say so, it seems the artist has been hurt before, and he's desperate for a relationship that won't end in ruin. He's looking to be in a love that's built to last, in a place "where tears'll never fall / True love don't run off." In the end, he's willing to go anywhere his heart is safe from breaking.
"I'll pick you up, you pick a place..."
We can catch a Southwest flight down there to Florida
Wade out in that blue water
We can take my old Toyota to Atlanta
Catch the Braves playin' the Marlins
To tell the truth, girl, I don't really care
I'd love the chance to take you anywhere
Just pick a place where hearts don't break, and I'll open up a tab
Somewhere we don't know a soul, and we can wash away the past
Somewhere it don't hurt
Girl, just say the word and I'm on my way
All you gotta do is pick a place
We can bounce from bar to bar down there on Broadway
And both sing out of tune
We can find a cheap hotel outside of Dallas
And never leave the room
If you think that there's a place and we can make it
I'll go anywhere with you, girl, you name it
Just pick a place where hearts don't break, and I'll open up a tab
Somewhere we don't know a soul, and we can wash away the past
Somewhere it don't hurt
Girl, just say the word and I'm on my way
All you gotta do is pick a place
Just pick a place
Where tears'll never fall
True love don't run off
If you think there's somewhere that ain't too late
Then pick a place where hearts don't break, and I'll open up tab
Somewhere we don't know a soul, and we can wash away the past
Somewhere it don't hurt
Girl, just say the word and I'm on my way
All you gotta do is pick a place
All you gotta do is pick a place
I'll pick you up, you pick a place
