Country music's most buzzed about newcomer, Hudson Westbrook, has had a whirlwind last 14 months or so dating back to the release of his breakout, debut single, 'Take It Slow.'
Soaking in the limelight from one release to the next ever since–including his debut radio single, 'House Again,' and the viral offerings of 'Sober,' '5 to 9,' 'Dressed Down' and more–the burgeoning artist is finally releasing his debut record, Texas Forever, on July 25.
Carving his place as one of country music’s most promising new voices, the project features 17 tracks, all co-written by the North Texas native, showcasing the depth and charm of a young artist raised on country tradition but unafraid to push its boundaries. Created alongside close collaborators like Neil Medley, Lukas Scott, Reid Haughton, Beau Bailey and more, the record explores themes of hard work, family, love and personal battles.
Amidst the sprawling tracklist, you'll find a mix of whiskey-soaked downers and high-energy bops, as well as a handful of tender love songs, such as 'Painted You Pretty.' A poignant confession of admiration, it's a vivid portrait of young love.
Written alongside Lukas Scott & Beau Bailey, the 2025 offering from the native Texan serves up the same general sound that has quickly become his signature calling card, seamlessly blending neotraditional and red dirt country with a sleek mainstream sheen.
Taking shape as a laid back, acoustic-driven tune, 'Painted You Pretty' finds Westbrook's vocals front and center as he's joined by a booming bass guitar and a serene steel, as well as his usual organic accompaniment.
Revitalizing the organic country-rock of red dirt, the rough-around-the-edges singer-songwriter first picked up a guitar in just 2020, effectively teaching himself how to play while enrolled in high school. In 2023, during his time at Texas Tech, he started playing around with melodies, penning what would be the first of many songs to his name, including the sprawling list of tracks that found their way onto Texas Forever.
"There’s a heaven up in the sky
And another one south of Dallas
I’m looking at it first-hand tonight
No if ands or buts about it
Got the draw you in smooth as sin
Take a look and look again
Thing the town’s talkin’ about
There ain’t a pick-up line
For one of a kind
Worth a shot worth a try
So baby won’t you hear me out"
Our narrator opens by explaining that contrary to popular belief, there's actually two heavens: the one that we've all heard about up in the ether and then another on earth where he is tonight, just south of Dallas.
As he sits staring at the girl of his dreams, he's left speechless as he racks his mind trying to figure out how to address a woman so stunning. Unable to come up with a pickup line that's fitting, he instead chooses to confess his admirations for her.
"You’re picture perfect you don’t need no frame
You’ll be hanging on my mind for don’t know for how many days
Kind eyes with a kill a man smile
The kind I ain’t seen around here in a while
Usually don’t see a work of art in a bar
So, girl in case you didn’t know
God painted you pretty, and I bet you’ve got a heart of gold"
Explaining that she's simply perfect, he likens her to a work of art that permanently hangs in the gallery of his mind.
Pretty eyes and a devilish smile, he can't quite comprehend how someone so gorgeous could be slumming it in the same dive bar as him, but just in case she isn't aware, he wants to let her know that she's absolutely breathtaking... and he's sure that her inside matches the beauty of her exterior, too.
"What’s the story with your turquoise ring
I notice there ain’t one on your left hand
And do your favorite days fall in the spring
I can tell the sun’s been kissing on your tan
You got aw hell, southern bell
Think you’ve put me in a spell
Girl I’m singing about"
Following the golden rule of complimenting a woman on either her outfit or accessories, our singer draws attention to a ring she's wearing, while also taking note that there's nothing on her left ring finger to signal she's committed to someone else.
Wanting to know everything about her, he asks about her favorite season, but he might've gotten distracted by her sun-kissed skin, which sends him down a lovestruck rabbit hole that he's not sure he'll ever get out of.
"You’re picture perfect you don’t need no frame
You’ll be hanging on my mind for don’t know for how many days
Kind eyes with a kill a man smile
The kind I ain’t seen around here in a while
Usually don’t see a work of art in a bar
So, girl in case you didn’t know
God painted you pretty and I bet you’ve got a heart of gold"
In the build up to the release of Texas Forever, Westbrook has been popping out one instantly beloved hit after another.
While he hasn't said anything specific about 'Painted You Pretty' at this point, the budding talent has noted just how important this long-awaited debut project is to him and all the work that went into bringing it to life.
“I’m so proud of this record,” Westbrook says. “I love Texas, it’s shaped so much about who I am. We wrote 50-60 songs for this project and narrowed it down to 17 that I think really represent where I am in my life right now and what I love making as an artist: songs that sound like where I grew up, but read like something that just about anyone could relate to.”
