Country music's most buzzed about newcomer, Hudson Westbrook, has had a whirlwind last 14 months or so dating back to the release of his breakout, debut single, 'Take It Slow.'
Soaking in the limelight from one release to the next ever since–including his debut radio single, 'House Again,' and the viral offerings of 'Sober,' '5 to 9,' 'Dressed Down' and more–the burgeoning artist is finally releasing his debut record, Texas Forever, on July 25.
Carving his place as one of country music’s most promising new voices, the project features 17 tracks, all co-written by the North Texas native, showcasing the depth and charm of a young artist raised on country tradition but unafraid to push its boundaries. Created alongside close collaborators like Neil Medley, Lukas Scott, Reid Haughton, Beau Bailey and more, the record explores themes of hard work, family, love and personal battles.
Near the top of the sprawling tracklist, you'll find a deceiving little ditty in 'Momma Raised a Winner.'
Written alongside Lukas Scott & Reid Haughton, the 2025 offering from the native Texan serves up the same general sound that has quickly become his signature calling card, seamlessly blending neotraditional and red dirt country with a sleek mainstream sheen.
'Momma Raised a Winner' takes the cake as one of Westbrook's more complex songs to date, as the production offers up a bright, '90s-inspired sound that juxtaposes its morose lyrics.
Revitalizing the organic country-rock of red dirt, the rough-around-the-edges singer-songwriter first picked up a guitar in just 2020, effectively teaching himself how to play while enrolled in high school. In 2023, during his time at Texas Tech, he started playing around with melodies, penning what would be the first of many songs to his name, including the sprawling list of tracks that found their way onto Texas Forever.
"A 30 rack oughta fix me up just right, find me knocking on 6th street's door
Naw it can’t be wrong if it feels right, the feeling right's what I came here for
Ain’t even gotta tell ‘em what to pour"
We find our narrator in the throes of bars found in Austin's Sixth Street, the city's renowned entertainment district known for its nightlife and historic buildings, similar in a way to Nashville's Broadway.
Explaining that a "30 rack"–the colloquial term for a case of beer containing 30 cans–is the cure to his problems, we start to wonder if maybe our man has a drinking problem, since the bartender doesn't even have to ask what he wants anymore when he walks in.
"Yeah, momma raised a winner but I'm drinking my dinner for the fifth night in a row
And yeah, I know she tried, but I do what I like and some things she don’t need to know
Said I could be a doctor, man on the moon but still got a ways to go
Yeah, momma raised a winner but I’m drinking my dinner for the fifth night in a row"
At the chorus is when the truth comes out.
Despite his potential and good raising, we find our singer on the fifth night of a bender.
Explaining that his mother did everything she could to set him up for success as a doctor or an astronaut or anything else he could dream of, he's instead decided to spend his life in a drunken stupor.
"Sunrise next to someone I don’t recognize
Something thumping in the back of my head
Half full can sitting on the night stand
Can’t pass up breakfast in bed"
The next morning, after successfully drinking his dinner in the form of whatever liquor he could find, he's experiencing one hell of a hangover and finds someone in his bed that he doesn't remember bringing home.
While he can only guess what the pair got up to the night before, our narrator doesn't think too deeply into it and instead wastes no time by starting the drinking for the day. After all, since he tends to drink his meals, it's time for breakfast.

In the build up to the release of Texas Forever, Westbrook has been popping out one instantly beloved hit after another.
While he hasn't said anything specific about 'Momma Raised a Winner' at this point, the budding talent has noted just how important this long-awaited debut project is to him and all the work that went into bringing it to life.
“I’m so proud of this record,” Westbrook says. “I love Texas, it’s shaped so much about who I am. We wrote 50-60 songs for this project and narrowed it down to 17 that I think really represent where I am in my life right now and what I love making as an artist: songs that sound like where I grew up, but read like something that just about anyone could relate to.”
