The Background:

As the excitement heated up ahead of Morgan Wallen's double-header at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium in July, fans were expecting the Sneedville hitmaker to perform the live debut of his I'm the Problem track of the same name. However, when the lights went down for his signature pre-show walk-out, rather than the usual ‘Broadway Girls’ or ‘Interlude’ reverberating out across the speakers, we got a revamped version of ‘Miami’ - featuring two blockbuster features.

Wallen recruits Lil Wayne and Rick Ross for this reimagined take on ‘Miami’, one of the more trap-leaning offerings from the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper's 2025 studio album, I'm the Problem. The country titan is a longstanding rap fan, and teaming up with these two legends of the genre undoubtedly serves as a bucket list moment.

The Sound:

The revamped version captures the hazy, trap-infused sound of the original, with Lil Wayne's syrupy, Auto-Tuned vocals and ad-libs enhancing this murky, atmospheric feel.

Wayne opts for a more melodic, R&B-inspired verse, while Rick Ross delivers a typically hard-hitting, braggadocious verse. Morgan Wallen's infectious, charismatic hook ties it all together, with his signature drawl coasting across the fiery instrumental.

The Meaning:

“(Miami) It ain't nothin' like where I'm from, nah
Yeah, I can't keep my gun in my truck in Miami
They don't know my name at these bars
And you can't even see any stars in Miami
You got me MIA for a couple days now
But it don't hit the same as my Tennessee town (Miami)
Except for gettin' sand in my boots
Ask yourself, "What the hell is a redneck gon' do in Miami?"
Miami”

Wallen's hook remains the same as on the original rendition of ‘Miami’, with the ‘Love Somebody’ singer-songwriter lamenting how different the beachside city is from his beloved home-state of Tennessee. He drops a witty play on words when he sings about being ‘MIA’ in Miami, because ‘MIA’ is the code for Miami International Airport.

There's another easter egg nestled away in this hook when Wallen name-checks his hit song, ‘Sand in My Boots’, which is all about a country boy's holiday romance.

“Yeah, yeah
Mula
Now if you're callin' New Orleans, but temporary
And she know that I'm colder than Refrigerator Perry
And she don't wanna go to New Orleans, it's Armageddon, so we go to South Beach, she say it's perfect for our wedding, I start sweating in a
Cherokee, without the doors, don't get no sand in my Jeep, on my decor
I'm 'bout to call, she look at me like "N****, please," so I pleased the bitch
We up in LIV on Sunday, I'm like, Jesus, bitch
Party in the 305, we so high, if we go live, you might see your bride
Can't believe your eyes for eatin' at Prime and
I eat so much shrimp, I got iodine poisonin'
I can't even swim, but I could throw a yacht party
We're really lit in Miami
I'm like Will Smith in Miami
I'm like Uncle Luke, Trick Daddy
Me and Trina almost got married, shit
Got the barn door on Collins
Can't see stars, just Star Island
I got a target on my wallet, but like Morgan, boy, I'm wildin' in Miami”

Unsurprisingly, Lil Wayne's verse contains a dizzying flurry of hilarious puns and outrageous turns of phrase. Whether he's comparing himself to NFL icon Refrigerator Perry because of how ‘cold’ he is, or claiming he's like Jesus because he's at LIV (i.e. ‘alive’) on a Sunday, he showcases his playful sense of humour throughout. When he calls Miami ‘the 305’, this is a callback to the city's original area code.

The unquestionable highlight, though, is Lil Wayne's amusing, tongue-in-cheek flip on Morgan Wallen's name, when he declares, “I got a target on my wallet, but like Morgan, boy, I'm wildin' in Miami”, with Wayne pronouncing the word ‘wildin’ like ‘Wallen’.

“(Maybach Music) Biggest boss, Ricky Rozay,
Feelin' good in my two seater
Top down, it's too easy
Yacht season in Miami
Sun's out, too breezy
Swimsuits on South Beach
Condo for my side piece
Changin' plans, let's just shop
Blue duffle bag, two hundred G's
Life's short, so live fast
Corvette with the red rag
Cried once, not twice
Really hurt when my dad passed
Make a toast, let's drink to it
Still real with my day ones
And I'm still down to die for you
Pray for me when that day comes”

Rick Ross then enters the fray to remind the listener that he's still one of the leading figures in rap. He depicts a carefree, sun-soaked afternoon spent driving along the Miami coast with his partner. There's also a vulnerable lyric in here, where Ross reflects on the anguish he felt when his dad passed away, before he emphasises to all those who have stuck by his side since ‘day one’ that he'd die for them.

What has Morgan Wallen said about 'Miami'?

When chatting to Theo Von, Wallen reflected on how the original version of ‘Miami’ came about, “It was a kind of spur of the moment thing...I've got a song on my record called ‘Miami’...It's a Keith Whitley flip, you know ‘Miami, My Amy’, that song? We flipped it...it's a little more like a rap style, but it's cool, man. I like it. It seemed like it could use a rapper on there, I didn't end up using a feature, we ended up just making a second verse, but it's one of those songs where it wouldn't be surprising if we got like a remix and did that...Once it's out, and all that stuff”.

He touched on his frustration that he didn't get a verse from BigXthaPlug, “Me and BigX, we almost did a song, but I don't know...I actually sent him a song and he didn't finish it, so I don't know. That's on him, I guess, I don't know what he was doing”.
