The Brudi Brothers - ‘Me More Cowboy Than You’

Official ‘Demo’ Version Release Date: January 8th, 2025

Songwriter: Conrad Brudi

Producer: Robert Leslie

The Background:

George, Conrad and Johannes Brudi - otherwise known as The Brudi Brothers - earned a viral hit in early 2025 with their tongue-in-cheek dig at the Nashville country scene, ‘Me More Cowboy Than You’. Released as a ‘Demo’ in January, the traditional-leaning track surged into the Top Five of Spotify's Viral Songs USA chart soon after.

The Seattle-based Brudi Brothers have performed across the US while amassing a cult following, with the multi-instrumentalists championing a return to a classic country sound.

The Sound:

From the moment you hear the whistling and plodding, Waltz-like instrumental, you feel transported to a 1950's Western Dancehall, with ’Me More Cowboy Than You’ serving as an homage to the retro sound of the likes of Hank Williams and Patsy Cline.

The Brudi Brothers’ layered vocals in the chorus accentuate the old-timey ambience that pervades ‘Me More Cowboy Than You’, with the lyric “Everyone is glued to their flickering screens / Faces illuminated in the dark” almost feeling like an anachronism.

The Meaning:

“Friday night, boys and girls I see
Drunk and running around like ants
They all just want to be heard and seen
Speaking their minds and taking their stance”

Although the tone throughout ‘Me More Cowboy Than You’ is light-hearted and playful, at its heart, the track serves as a critique of Nashvillian country culture, with the protagonist suggesting that mainstream country artists all compete to prove they're more authentic.

In reality, though, he implies barely any of them are ‘real’ cowboys, with the narrator painting Music City and Country Radio as plastic and false. He looks out at a Friday night bar scene - presumably on Nashville's Broadway strip - and likens all the up-and-coming artists jumping from bar-to-bar to frantic, desperate ants.

“Some are real happy, and some are mean
Some are just looking for quick romance
They want to be part of the popular scene
So they dress the part and take their chance”

The narrator outlines that these hopeful country artists’ personalities inevitably vary, with some being genuinely content, while others are rude and obnoxious as they try to work their way to the top. He describes how they attempt to “dress the part”, which sets up the core premise of the track, which is that they're all hat, no cattle.

“Boys and girls are acting real strange
Pretending they're welders and cowboys and such
Buying old work gear from the exchange;
But you can tell thеir hands don't do very much”

Here, the protagonist scratches his head as he hears yet another mainstream country act claiming they have a blue collar background, purely to appeal to their audience.

He describes them going as far as buying old tools to build their authenticity, before highlighting you can tell from their hands that, in actuality, they don't do much manual work at all.

“Saying me, me, mе, me, me more cowboy than you!
I swear that I'm working class through and through
Saying me, me, me more cowboy than you!”

The hook is equal parts hilarious and infectious, with The Brudi Brothers stepping into the shoes of these wannabe cowboys and mockingly claiming, “Me more cowboy than you”. The use of ‘Me’ instead of ‘I'm’ exacerbates their sense of foolishness, with the narrator building an exaggerated charicature of Nashville cowboys.

“Everyone is glued to their flickering screens
Faces illuminated in the dark
Their pockets are full, and their cars are clean;
Their biggest worry is where they should park”

The protagonist then goes on to suggest that, despite speaking proudly about their working class roots, many of these pretend cowboys come from wealthy, upmarket backgrounds. He depicts them as have plenty of money and clean, fancy cars.

“So if you see cowboy hats and boots
Chances are it's on daddy's dime
They're all in the bathroom snortin' their toot
Having a mighty expensive time”

He concludes by addressing the listener, warning them that, if they see an artist donning a cowboy hat in Nashville, they most likely got their Stetson as a gift from their father, rather than being genuine cowboys. Then, he implies they take drugs, blowing more money than he could dream of as they enjoy “a mighty expensive time”.

What have The Brudi Brothers said about ‘Me More Cowboy Than You’?

When uploading a live performance of ‘Me More Cowboy Than You’, The Brudi Brothers quipped, “Wrote a mean song because we’re bad boys. Let us know if you want to hear more of it”. A number of fellow country artists have taken to the comments to express their support of the track, with Avery Anna gushing, “This is so fire”. Even the official Grand Ole Opry page joined in, sharing simply, “This is good”, while ‘A Lot More Free’ hitmaker Max McNown underlined his appreciation for ’Me More Cowboy Than You’ via Instagram, toasting, “Haha this is incredible”.
