Adrien Nunez has worn a number of different hats in his burgeoning career - both literally and metaphorically - with the New York singer-songwriter starting off as a varsity basketball player in Michigan. Then, Adrien Nunez began amassing a sizeable following via TikTok courtesy of his fun, light-hearted videos during which Adrien flips out his cap, before singing along to his favourite new country songs.
In September 2024, Adrien Nunez made the decision to switch from a country music influencer to a country music artist in his own right, dropping his debut single, ‘LOW ROAD’. Soon after, Adrien released a reimagined version of ‘LOW ROAD’ with his good friend, Avery Anna, who was one of the first artists to appear in videos with him.
‘LOW ROAD’ is apparently based on the story of a past relationship, where Adrien Nunez found out his girlfriend - now ex - had been cheating on him with a fellow basketball player.
Adrien Nunez's vocals take centre-stage for much of ‘LOW ROAD’, with the commanding, layered vocal style of the hook contrasting with the comparatively intricate, vulnerable delivery that pervades the majority of Adrien's verses.
The titular line carries the feel of a pop-folk anthem, while the introduction of Avery Anna's sleek, evocative voice brings a new dimension to the track, with the ‘Vanilla’ crooner switching up the lyrics and adding a second perspective to the narrative.
“Aw baby, you told me one thing, did another
I did some wrong, you did it double
That's what I get for lovin' trouble, I guess”
Adrien Nunez admits some responsibility for the breakdown of the relationship, but underlines that his ex-girlfriend inflicted ‘double’ the amount of damage. He confesses that he's always been drawn to ‘trouble’, but in this instance, it led to heartbreak.
“Like they always say
Wrong time, wrong girl, wrong place
I was good to you, and I had faith
Someone I thought I knew
Changed to someone new
You took it too far, and I ran out of grace
So you took the low road
And sold it off like you were good to me
You left me nowhere else to go
I had no choice but to leave”
He emphasises that he treated his old flame well on the whole, before lamenting how her betrayal made him see her in a whole new light. Adrien Nunez suggests that he did his best to take the moral ‘high road’ and have grace, but she still took the ‘low road’ and refused to show the same compassion to him.
“You stabbed my back and twisted the knife
Whole time, you knew it wasn't right
And somehow, you still justify yourself
While you're on a low road
Low, low road”
We get a more visceral description of the betrayal here, as Adrien Nunez depicts his past lover as not only stabbing him in the back, but also twisting the knife to cause maximum pain. He outlines how his ex would still try to find ways to justify her actions.
“I took a drive and I crossed every line
You hurt me once, I was out to hurt you twice
Yeah, the whole time, was it love or just for show?
You build me up so high, you couldn't know
I was on my
Low road”
Avery Anna sheds new light on the story through her verse, mirroring Adrien's opening lines by describing how her partner hurt her once, which led to her seeking to “hurt you twice”. She wonders whether they ever loved one another, before providing a fresh twist on the title by accusing her ex of building her up too high and idolising her. This placed pressure on her shoulders, which led to tension in the relationship, as she saw herself as being unable to live up to these lofty expectations.
This adds an interesting dimension to the tale, because it contradicts Adrien Nunez's claims that she was justifying her misdeeds in her head - perhaps this is a hint that his ex was acting out of self-sabotage, rather than actually being in love with someone else.
Taking to socials on the day of the release of this revamped version of ‘LOW ROAD’, Adrien Nunez heartwarmingly paid homage to Avery Anna, “Avery was the first artist that was down to make videos with me when i first moved to Nashville. Fast forward 6 months and we have A SONG TOGETHER 🤯 She is a great person, a great friend and a freaking rockstar 🎸🤘🏼 I appreciate you more than you know!!”
Avery echoed his sentiments, posting her tribute to her ‘LOW ROAD’ collaborator, “I’m so honored to be featured on this song, Adrien is one of the most hard working guys I know. Super full circle to do this together, Adrien Nunez so proud of you !!”
