As the excitement built ahead of Bailey Zimmerman's keenly awaited sophomore album, Different Night Same Rodeo, fans had been speculating as to which special guests we could look forward to hearing on the project. Few could have predicted this crossover, though, with R&B-pop hitmaker The Kid LAROI hopping on ‘Lost’.
The duo's respective sounds complement each other seamlessly, with Zimmerman's atmospheric vibrato combining with LAROI's sleek, Auto-Tuned croons to produce a galvanising earworm. They might be singing about the pain of heartbreak, but it's hard not to feel the urge to dance along to this infectious anthem.
Throughout ‘Lost’, Zimmerman serves up a timely reminder to fans of his ability to craft a pop-leaning smash. His charismatic vibrato glides across the energising, synth-driven instrumental, before LAROI enters the fray for the reflective second verse.
What makes ‘Lost’ especially enjoyable is the fact that it feels like a genuine collaboration, with Zimmerman and LAROI trading lyrics and offering ad-libs throughout the whole track, rather than the guest simply turning up for a few lines and then dipping.
‘Lost’ finds Bailey Zimmerman and The Kid LAROI lamenting how directionless they feel after their respective lovers left them. The protagonists confess that they lost half of themselves when their exes disappeared, such was the hold they had on them.
Zimmerman expresses his bemusement at just how lost he feels, juxtaposing the way in which his surroundings haven't changed (“Same street / Same lights / Same people in a bar on a Saturday night”) with the fact that everything feels different since his ex broke up with him (“But I'm here lookin' 'round like, "Where am I?"”).
LAROI echoes these sentiments, but makes it clear that he feels like his ex's heart was never really in the relationship. He recalls how intertwined their lives became, as he got to know her loved ones, before questioning if he should cut ties with them too (“Girl you had me locked into your friends / And your family got close too / Tell me, which ones should I not talk to? / In all of my future plans, it was us two”).
“Where do I go from here?
'Cause baby I’m going nowhere fast
'Cause half of me disappeared
When those taillights didn't turn back
Now I’m lost in the memory
Lost in the blue
Lost in the sheets in a bed that was meant for two
Where do I go from here?
'Cause I never been lost 'til I lost you
-
Same street
Same lights
Same people in a bar on a Saturday night
Same moon
Same sky
But I'm here lookin' 'round like, "Where am I?"
-
My mind's spinning out of control
I can't sleep when I’m sleeping alone
I’m up all night just checking my phone
Knowin' you ain’t coming home
-
Where do I go from here?
'Cause baby I'm going nowhere fast
'Cause half of me disappeared
When those taillights didn’t turn back
Now I'm lost in the memory
Lost in the blue
Lost in the sheets in a bed that was meant for two
Where do I go from here?
'Cause I never been lost 'til I lost you
-
Girl you had me locked into your friends
And your family got close too
Tell me, which ones should I not talk to?
In all of my future plans, it was us two
I wish that I knew in yours it was just you
I shoulda read the signs
Seen them too many times
And looking back, I know now why they say that love is blind
I guess you can't win a game you don't know that you're playing
Now that it's come to an end all that I can say is
-
Where do I go from here?
'Cause baby I'm going nowhere fast
'Cause half of me disappeared
When those taillights didn't turn back
Now I'm lost in the memory
Lost in the blue
Lost in the sheets in a bed that was meant for two
Where do I go from here?
'Cause I never been lost 'til I lost you (Oh)
-
My mind's spinning out of control
I can't sleep when I'm sleeping alone (Sleeping alone)
I'm up all night just checking my phone
Knowin' you ain't coming home
-
Where do I go from here?
'Cause baby I'm going nowhere fast
'Cause half of me disappeared
When those taillights didn't turn back
Now I'm lost in the memory
Lost in the blue
Lost in the sheets in a bed that was meant for two
Where do I go from here?
'Cause I never been lost 'til I lost you (Oh)
-
I never been lost 'til I lost you
I never been lost 'til I lost you”
