Morgan Wallen - ‘Interlude’

Label: Big Loud Records / Mercury Records

Release Date: May 16th, 2025

Songwriters: Morgan Wallen, Rocky Block, John Byron, Blake Pendergrass & Ryan Vojtesak

Producer: Charlie Handsome

The Background:

Despite spanning a brief 44-seconds, the ‘Interlude’ from Morgan Wallen's 2025 studio album, I'm the Problem, quickly became one of the most puzzling songs from the project - mainly because of its strange positioning at Track No. 6. Usually, you'd expect an ‘Interlude’ to arrive somewhere around the halfway point of the record.

Shortly after the album dropped, Wallen teased that he might be recording an extended version of the track. The Sneedville megastar responded to a fan that asked, “I need a full 2 minute song of interlude please”, with the seemingly pointed reply, “Noted”.

Since then, the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper has incorporated the brooding, trap-infused ‘Interlude’ into his signature pre-show walkout, alongside the staple, ‘Broadway Girls’.

With Drake joining Wallen for an unexpected walkout cameo in Houston, we're wondering if the positioning of ‘Interlude’ at No. 6 is a veiled hint that the Toronto rapper may be appearing on the extended rendition of the song. Drake has always referred to himself as ‘The 6 God’, due to his home-city being nicknamed ‘The 6’.

The Sound:

As the only song from I'm the Problem that was solely produced by Charlie Handsome, ‘Interlude’ carries a stormy, murky ambience that incorporates neo-R&B and trap textures. The track opens with Morgan Wallen's ominous hum, giving ‘Interlude’ a Travis Scott and Kid Cudi-inspired feel, before he proceeds to dolefully stretch his charismatic drawl across the rattling hi-hats and rumbling 808s.

We certainly echo the calls for a full version of ‘Interlude’, with this offering showcasing a new, darker dimension to Morgan Wallen's Hip Hop and trap flirtation. Before, we've heard celebratory, tongue-in-cheek crossover earworms such as ’Broadway Girls’ with Lil Durk, ‘WHISKEY WHISKEY‘ with Moneybagg Yo, ‘180 (Lifestyle)‘ and ‘Miami’, but here, Wallen is channelling his inner PARTYNEXTDOOR and Drake as he opts for a more introspective, early-hours atmosphere.

The Meaning:

“Mmm

You’re why I drink too much

You’re why I love that taste

Yeah if we’re moving on

Girl we just keep movin’”

With just three verses - two of which are repeated - at first glance it seems there's not a whole lot to unpack from ‘Interlude’. However, it serves a key function on I'm the Problem, with Morgan Wallen exploring the central theme of blame that permeates the project. It serves as an extension of the rueful title-track, with Wallen conveying a bitter argument where each partner feels the other is at fault.

Here, the lines, “You're why I drink too much / You're why I love that taste” feel like direct continuations of the core messaging in ‘I Had Some Help’ and ‘I'm the Problem’. Wallen admits he is overly dependent on alcohol, but he claims his lover is the reason he feels the need to drink. It's a visceral snapshot into a toxic relationship.

“I’m why you can’t find love

I’m why the shit don’t change

Yeah if we’re movin’ on

Girl we just keep movin’ the wrong way”

Then, Morgan Wallen flips the perspective, so that he's singing from his partner's viewpoint. He hints that it's an on-off relationship, as she pins the blame for her faltering love-life on Wallen, implying they need to break the cycle of calling it quits, falling back into each others arms and then imploding the following morning.

There's a witty play on the phrase ‘movin’ on’, with Wallen crooning, “Yeah, if we're moving on / Girl we just keep movin’ the wrong way”. He transitions from the desire to ‘move on’ from one another to the indication that, whenever they try to do this, they just end up wanting each other even more and they ‘move’ in the wrong direction.
