Another of the more under-rated offerings from Morgan Wallen's stellar 2025 record, I'm the Problem, ‘If You Were Mine’ finds the Sneedville titan showing off his romantic side.
Morgan Wallen croons warmly to a woman he knows he can't be with, with the ‘Everything I Love’ singer-songwriter letting his imagination run wild as he outlines what he'd really love to do with her in a world where the couple could be together.
Morgan Wallen allows the spotlight to fall on his sultry, simmering vocals for ‘If You Were Mine’, with the country chart-topper's delivery being embraced by a comforting blanket of electric guitars and steel. Although stripped-back in terms of tempo, the cushioning, built-out production contrasts with the sparseness of other much-loved offerings from I'm the Problem, such as ‘I'm a Little Crazy’ and ‘Smile’.
“Neon moon, yeah it’s gettin’ late
I look at you, and I ain’t thinkin’ straight
Yeah
Horse to the water probably shouldn’t drink
But the truth is we both want a taste
You ain’t gotta go and hide your phone
I know that you got that shit at home
But damn if I ever got you alone
Just so you know”
Morgan Wallen drops a flurry of subtle song references throughout ‘If You Were Mine’, with Wallen name-checking ‘Neon Moon’ by his good friends and ‘90s country legends, Brooks & Dunn, here. He cites the famous adage that you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink, instead flipping it to convey how they shouldn't ‘drink’ and indulge their temptations. It carries a similar theme to ‘Single Than She Was’ from One Thing At A Time, with Wallen making advances on a woman he meets in a bar, admitting he knows she's having issues with her partner.
“I’d lay you down
And I’d take my time
Would you let me drown
In your ocean eyes?
Ain’t a part of you
My hands wouldn’t wanna find
That’s what I’d do
If you were mine”
Wallen paints a romantic picture throughout the hook, as he confesses how much he wants to spend the night with her, name-checking another song here - Billie Eilish's brooding 2017 hit, ‘Ocean Eyes’ (or perhaps just borrowing the evocative description).
“We both feel it
Damn right I said it
I know that it’s wrong
But I don’t regret it
If you want it to happen
Baby I’m gonna let it
‘Cause I swear in a second”
The protagonist underlines that he knows that to give in to their shared desire would be wrong, seeing as the woman has a partner, but the fact that it is forbidden love only makes the yearning grow stronger. The moment they've been waiting for seems to inch closer, with Wallen stressing that all she needs to give him the go-ahead, and they can get out of the bar and make their fantasies a reality.
As is often the case of late, the ‘Thought You Should Know’ singer-songwriter has so far remained tight-lipped on how the song came about.
However, when revealing the release date for I'm the Problem, Wallen provided fans with an insight into the theme of introspection that courses through the project as a whole.
“I have been a problem, for sure, and I've got no problem admitting that. But there are other sides to me as well," he explained. "I've spent the last 11 months really trying to figure out, 'Do I still want to be the problem? Is it time to move past that phase in my life? I think it probably is, and this might be the last time I get a chance to honestly say it.”
