On Tuesday, April 15th, just a matter of days after teasing a new track titled ‘I Ain't Comin‘ Back’, Morgan Wallen surprised us with the news that this was actually his second Post Malone collaboration - and that it would be dropping on Friday, April 18th.
It's not yet clear whether ‘I Ain't Comin’ Back’ was penned during the same 2024 writing sessions as ‘I Had Some Help’, but we imagine this was the case, given the fact that Seth England - the CEO of Morgan Wallen's label, Big Loud - confirmed Wallen and Post Malone wrote a staggering seven songs during their first write together. Post also spoke about a mysterious second collaboration with Wallen during his September 2024 appearance on Theo Von's This Past Weekend podcast.
Aptly released on Good Friday, which commemorates Jesus’ crucifixion, ‘I Ain't Comin‘ Back’ finds Morgan Wallen and Post Malone ruefully quipping that - unlike Jesus - they won't be ‘coming back’. The infectious offering was penned by the prolific grouping of Wallen, Post, ERNEST, HARDY, Charlie Handsome and Louis Bell.
‘I Ain't Comin‘ Back’ feels cut from the same cloth as Post Malone's 2024 record, F-1Trillion, with Morgan Wallen and Post trading verses across a cushioning, uptempo backing, with the duo blending traditional country with contemporary pop.
There are hints of yearning steel and warm, acoustic guitars infused into the mix, with the Post's signature vibrato complementing Wallen's charismatic drawl seamlessly.
“I'm a redneck
'Cause I drink beer and I dip Skoal
Guess I'm a rambler
'Cause I can't not be on the road
Might be a lost cause
'Cause I'll be out 'til the lights are on
And I'm a gambler
I'll take the over on the underdog”
The opening verse for ‘I Ain't Comin’ Back’ finds Morgan Wallen delivering a similarly defiant message about his down-home roots to ‘Come Back As A Redneck’ with HARDY. He underlines that he can't change his redneck tendencies, as well as his wild spirit that longs to be out on the road, rather than settling down. Wallen touches on his penchant for Skoal, a brand of dipping tobacco.
We get a satisfying turn of phrase here, as Wallen emphasises how he also likes to gamble and life on the edge, choosing to “take the over” - i.e. bet on a minimum number of points being scored - on the underdog. This juxtaposition between ‘over’ and ‘under’ seemingly symbolises the protagonist's conflicted, volatile nature.
“Girl, half of this town has got a name for me
And I can't say I don't agree, huh”
The protagonist then comments on how the local town continues to criticise him and call him names, before introspectively outlining that, in truth, he feels that some of this denigration is deserved. This could be a wry comment from Wallen on the fraught relationship he's had with Nashville in recent years, with the Sneedville megastar being seen by many within Music City as the ‘bad boy’ of the genre.
“But the night I said "I'm leavin,'" I turned into Richard Petty
Broke my heart, so I got even in my '97 Chevy
Now I'm walkin' on this water, mixed with Johnnie Walker Black
There's a lot of reasons I ain't Jesus
But the main one is that I ain't comin' back
Oh, no, no, I ain't comin' back”
The protagonist recalls the moment he left the relationship in question, describing the speed at which he drove away as akin to that of legendary US racing driver, Richard Petty. He suggests he was acting out to ‘get even’ after his ex broke his heart.
Then, we get a flurry of Jesus-related imagery, with Morgan Wallen and Post Malone suggesting they feel as though they're “walkin’ on this water”, referring to when Jesus performs this famous miracle. In their case, they just feel like they're walking on water due to the alcohol buzz - and it's not water, it's Jonnie Walker Black whiskey.
They go on to admit there are a lot of reasons why they fall short of the ideal Jesus sets, before remarking that “the main one” is the fact that they're not ‘coming back’. It's a playful, bittersweet nod to Jesus’ resurrection three days after his crucifixion.
“You called mе the devil
Then you told mе where to go, go throw your pebbles
I'll be somewhere gettin' stoned, girl, it ain't my fault
Ain't no need to wait three days
I might be a lot of things
But I ain't your savin' grace”
Post Malone continues the spiritually-minded imagery, reminding his old flame that she likened him to the devil. He then offers up a witty lyric, telling his ex to keep throwing metaphorical ‘pebbles’ at him, before shrugging his shoulders and confessing he'll be getting ‘stoned’. Although Wallen seems to take some of the blame for the breakdown in the relationship in his verse, Post maintains, “It ain't my fault”.
He then references the titular theme by assuring his previous lover that she won't have to “wait three days” - the amount of time before Jesus returned - because he's never coming back. Post goes on to conclude that he “ain't your savin’ grace”.
Morgan Wallen and Post Malone haven't spoken directly about ‘I Ain't Comin’ Back’ yet, but in a 2024 interview with Theo Von, Post gushed about a second song they'd worked on together. The ‘Chemical’ singer-songwriter light-heartedly teased, “[Morgan Wallen's] amazing...we wrote [‘I Had Some Help’] together. We cut another song too...I think I remember doing a verse, it was one of those long nights...!”.
