Jackson Dean - 'Heavens To Betsy'

Label: Big Machine Records

Release Date: August 2nd, 2024

Album: On The Back Of My Dreams

Songwriters: Benjy Davis, Driver Williams & Jackson Dean

Producer: Luke Dick

The Background:

Since Jackson Dean's speedy rise to newfound country stardom a few years back, mostly thanks to his history-making debut single, 'Don't Come Lookin',' he has been steadily building on the foundation that he's laid.

After releasing his debut record, 2022's Greenbroke, and his sensational Live From The Ryman album, Dean ushered in his sophomore project, On The Back Of My Dreams, with a song that fans are already familiar and deeply enamored with.

The lead single, 'Heavens To Betsy', has been a staple piece of Dean's live shows for the last few years, yet it's only existed on streaming services as a live recording, up until now.

Found on his Live From The Ryman album, as well as a special Apple Music Session, the Maryland native never intended to record a studio version of the song, until he saw how much 'Heavens To Betsy' resonated with audiences night after night.

An impactful song with a powerful message about redemption, atonement and the will to be better, 'Heavens To Betsy' is undoubtedly one of the standout tracks in Dean's growing catalogue.

The Sound:

While there are few notable differences between the live and studio versions of 'Heavens To Betsy,' the two takes give off slightly different feelings.

The live version finds Dean giving a much more compelling vocal performance, as you can clearly hear the emotion and conviction in his delivery, as well as the impassioned response from the audience.

Meanwhile, the studio version, produced by Luke Dick, features a much cleaner and crisper vocal from the young artist, but one that still drives the song's message home every time. The most notable difference comes at the conclusion. Where Dean would usually reprise the first three lines of the first verse, the song simply fades away.

Both takes on 'Heavens To Betsy' are mostly the same instrumentally, with a quiet acoustic guitar setting the stage. As the song builds, so does the production, as his band eventually breaks out into a full-on jam session where a bridge would usually be placed.

The Meaning:

"Heavens to Betsy
I don't know if you can hear me
But up here you're coming clear as a bell
Now heavens to Betsy
I finally quit the drinking
I hate that my demons put you through hell"

Though the phrase's origins are mostly unclear, "Heavens to Betsy" is a southern saying that can express a wide range of things, including surprise, joy or anger, that most closely translates to "good gracious" or "good heavens". Yet, this is not the interpretation that Dean had when he heard the saying for the first time.

Rather, Dean, who was only 19 when he penned it alongside Driver Williams and Benjy Davis, was struck with the image of a man on the outskirts of heaven desperately trying to get in touch with his daughter back down on earth. This can be heard in the opening lines as the speaker explains to his daughter that he can hear her loud and clear.

He provides an update to what we quickly gather is his estranged daughter, sharing that he's beat the bottle, but understands that his struggles have taken a toll on her over the years.

"And I bet you're just as surprised as I am
They'd ever let a sinner like me in
And I know I didn't do
Enough watching over you
But I will until I see you again
If you'll let me"

Noting his overall shock that "a sinner like [him]" would ever be allowed into those pearly gates, the father acknowledges and takes responsibilities for his many shortcomings on earth.

While he knows that during his lifetime he didn't come through as a father should, he adds that his mission now will be to watch over his daughter from afar until she finally comes to join him on those streets made of gold.

"Heavens to Betsy
Blink twice if you remember
Just skipping rocks on the river
Weren't knee high to a stump
And they still haunt me
Your pink rain boots in the driveway
What kind of man would drive away
Just give up and run"

Once again trying to make contact with his daughter and unsure of whether she can even hear him, the father reminisces on a few of the bright memories he has of the time with his little girl, including skipping rocks on the river and her little pink rain boots.

Though these memories aren't all that bright, as he quickly falls back into his regret as asks "what kind of man would drive away, just give up and run?"

It's apparent that he has deep-seated guilt for his actions and choices on earth, but with any luck, he'll be able to make up for it as he serves as her guardian angel for years to come.

"And I bet you're just as surprised as I am
They'd ever let a sinner like me in
And I know I didn't do
Enough watching over you
But I will until I see you again
If you'll let me
Heavens to Betsy"

What has Jackson Dean said about 'Heavens To Betsy'?

As previously mentioned, 'Heavens To Betsy' has been a fixture of Dean's live shows for several years now. Notably invoking quite the reaction from crowds all around the world, it's message is one that rings true to audiences far and wide.

“’Heavens to Betsy’ is like the little song that could. We wrote it and never thought it’d see the light of day, but I started playing it on radio tour to get it out of my head and kill time, and I saw a grown man break down and cry to it," Dean shared in a statement. "That’s an image that will hit you like a ton of bricks. So we started incorporating a bigger version of it into our live shows and I thought the Live At The Ryman version would be the only place it lived. But once again this song exceeded my expectations".

He continued, "Night after night, people tell me how it’s helping them through their grief – which is such a beautiful thing. Just the other day someone told me that their father died 11 years ago and hearing ‘Betsy’ gave them the closure they’ve been seeking. That’s the reason we do this. Being able to connect in such a big, meaningful way is an honor I do not take lightly. I hope it goes out into the world and continues to heal, inspire, and move folks.”

The song's depth isn't ever lost on Dean, though, as he explains that “I still sometimes get a lump in my throat singing ‘Betsy’ because I’ve seen that dynamic play out too many times. Breaks my heart that when people let their demons get the best of them, it’s usually their loved ones that end up with the most scars.

"I hope this song serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to right your wrongs and inspires folks to look things square in the eye and say it out loud.”
