We've been enjoying the warm glow of Post Malone's presence in the country music world for a number of months now, but back when the prospect of a country album from Posty was just a far-fetched fantasy, the first tantalising snippet of the Luke Combs-assisted ‘Guy For That’ emerged out of the blue to send us all into a frenzy.
It's safe to say this one has been a long time coming. We heard the first rumblings of a potential collaboration when we saw the photograph of Luke, Posty and James McNair in the studio in the week leading up to the CMA Awards in November 2023.
Then, Post Malone shared an all-too brief video of him jamming out to a clip of ‘Guy For That’ in February 2024 - notably, his first ever teaser of an original country song (if we discount Morgan Wallen's quickly-deleted demo of ‘I Had Some Help’ around Christmas).
As the studio version of ‘I Had Some Help’ arrived in May and then Post Malone's beer-drenched Blake Shelton duet, ‘Pour Me a Drink’, dropped in June, ‘Guy For That’ was seemingly placed on the back burner. Thankfully, though, once the album - F-1Trillion - was announced, Luke and Posty shared another teaser for ‘Guy For That’, with the duo being spotted in July filming the song's music video. Soon after, he confirmed ‘Guy For That’ would arrive on Friday, July 26th. Excitingly, Post Malone has confirmed he has a second collaboration with Luke Combs, the title of which is yet to be unveiled, appearing on F-1Trillion.
Post Malone and Luke Combs’ distinctive vocals mesh together beautifully on ‘Guy For That’, with both artists infusing a slight rasp of desperation into their delivery to elevate the emotionality of the track. Posty's voice is cushioned by his signature vibrato and reverb, which ensures his verse carries the polished, almost electronic feel that we've become accustomed to throughout his sprawling discography.
Luke Combs showcases his range, starting his verse with a drawn-in reflection on the aftermath of the break-up, before rapidly upping the ante and guiding ‘Guy For That’ towards a rousing crescendo. Posty and Luke are surrounded by a playful, swirling collection of electric guitars, giving the track a classic country feel that undoubtedly places it closer sonically to ‘Pour Me a Drink’ than ‘I Had Some Help’.
“I've got a guy designin’ my rifle
My momma's new boyfriend re-binds Bibles
Ricky down the road, he resoles Red Wings
Hell, I got a guy for every damn thing
Oh, that ain't exactly what I'm lookin’ for, ‘cause I'm lookin’ for”
The narrative of ‘Guy For That’ revolves around two protagonists who have a phone-book full of people who can fix just about anything, with Post Malone remarking how he has a friend who's putting together a new hunting rifle for him and someone nearby named Ricky who's great at resoling his Red Wing cowboy boots. Posty also remarks how his mother's new partner is great at repairing old Bibles, which foreshadows the themes of needing redemption and salvation later in the song.
As for their relationships though? Well, that's a whole other story. While Posty and Luke have a guy for most things, they don't have someone who can fix up their broken love-life.
“Is someone to put her tires back in the drive
And if they don't, then I just might
Lose what's left of my never lovin' mind
I'm damn near down to my last dime
I'm pretty good at breaking down a heart
But picking up the pieces is the hard part”
More than anything, they need someone who can somehow heal their relationship and get their partner's truck back where it belongs - on the drive of their home.
If these last-ditch attempts don't work, the narrator outlines how it might just cause them to lose their mind, before explaining they've almost run out of money as well as willpower. This adds to the down-and-out theme of the track, as well as hinting they've spent all they have on ways of trying to convince their lover to return.
They explain how they have no difficulty when it comes to ruining their relationships, before transitioning to an evocative image of their lover's heart literally breaking. Post Malone and Luke Combs portray how they're struggling to put the pieces back together and salvage the relationship from the wreckage before it's too late.
“She's searchin' for someone who's gonna build it back
But I ain't got a guy for that”
The titular lyric consolidates how Post Malone and Luke Combs have ‘a guy’ who can solve all their problems, except that of their love-life. They share their fears that their old flame is currently out looking for a man that can offer what they were unable to and rebuild her broken heart. It's worth pointing out that, much like ‘I Had Some Help’, ‘Guy For That’ is based on a fictional story, as both Post Malone and Luke Combs are - as far as we know - in happy, committed relationships
“Know a VIP up at MIT
And he still won't let me fly the Time Machine
Someone to turn back the hands on my new AP
But, buddy, what I really need”
For Luke Combs’ verse, he echoes Posty's sentiments about having plenty of high-flying and handy people in his contact-book, joking that he knows a VIP at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This leads into the tongue-in-cheek comment that, even though they're at one of the leading technological and scientific Universities in the world, they won't let him use their (make-believe) Time Machine so that he can ‘turn back the hands’ on his luxurious Audemars Piguet watch, in order to rectify the mistakes he made in the relationship. Luke then doubles-down on Posty's words that what he really needs is someone to save his relationship.
After the initial teaser, Luke Combs accompanied the second snippet by asking, “We doin’ this or what, Post Malone?” before Posty replied, “Okay, FINE 😤 but you like this more than the other one?!?! 😈”, hinting they have a second collaboration up their sleeves.
