Thomas Rhett - ‘Gone Country’

Label: The Valory Music Co. / Big Machine Label Group

Release Date: June 7th, 2024

Album: About A Woman

Songwriters: Thomas Rhett, Rocky Block, Julian Bunetta, John Byron, Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Joe Reeves & Ryan Vojtesak

The Background:

One of the most anticipated tracks from Thomas Rhett's 2024 album, About a Woman, the Georgia hitmaker dropped ‘Gone Country’ in June, two months ahead of the full record.

The infectious earworm arrived after the lead single, ‘Beautiful As You’, and served as one of just four tracks to be made available ahead of the album, along with ‘Overdrive’ and ‘After All The Bars Are Closed’. ‘Gone Country’ drew early acclaim from fans and critics alike thanks to its acoustic, classic country feel, which strays from sleeker, R&B-leaning offerings on the record, such as ‘Back To Blue’ and ‘Fool’.

The Sound:

‘Gone Country’ features the most distinctive, playful composition on About a Woman, with Thomas Rhett's warm drawl coasting across a staccato acoustic guitar riff. The stop-start feel of the instrumental injects an extra jolt of energy into ‘Gone Country’, with the sinuous track building momentum before its momentous climax.

The Meaning:

“Once she gone country, she never goin’ back

She feelin’ right at home with her boots up on my dash

When she go back to the city, that’s just to pack

She headed for a spot a little further off the map, yeah”

‘Gone Country’ finds Thomas Rhett toasting how, once his wife of 12 years, Lauren, decided to embrace country, she was hooked and there was no turning back. It's a trademark country tale of a city-girl deciding to eschew that lifestyle in favour of a more rustic way of living out in the sticks. TR jokes that the only reason she returns to her home in the city is to pack more clothes for their rural adventures. It's worth highlighting that, in reality, TR and Lauren have always been ‘country’, with both growing up in Tennessee and even attending the same high school.

“She was shy when he met her in that bar

Said she was from a place stars don’t light up at dark

She said she wasn’t stayin’, she was only passing through

And he said okay I just want one little dance with you”

This isn't based wholly on TR and Lauren's relationship, as they first met in kindergarten. In this story, Thomas Rhett meets the woman in a bar, and she assures him she's just ‘passing through’, before falling in love with the country and deciding to stay.

“Once she heard the band playin’, her hips started swangin’

Her lips started twangin’ from that whiskey she was drankin’

She told him she was thinkin’ the bar’s about to close

He said where you wanna go, she said anywhere but home”

As the night progresses, the woman gradually warms up to the idea of spending more time out in the so-called boondocks. When the last call rings out in the bar, she disappointedly tells him that she doesn't want the night to end just yet.

“He turned the key, and took her on a Chevy ride

That radio was on That Ain’t My Truck from ‘95

And she said wait I know this, this is Alabama right?

That boy he laughed so hard half of his truck was cross them double yellow lines”

As a result, Thomas Rhett takes her for a spin in his Chevrolet truck, and the iconic 1995 anthem, ‘That Ain't My Truck’, is playing on the radio. The woman fails to identify who sings it, as she amusingly remarks, “This is Alabama, right?”, prompting TR to laugh out loud. What makes this particularly endearing is the fact that it was, in fact, Thomas Rhett's dad, Rhett Akins, who released ‘That Ain't My Truck’.

“They were chasin’ that moon off the pavement

They parked and parked their denims on the hood and watched it fadin’

That’s when he heard her sayin’ this ‘bout good as it gets

Leaned a smile up on her lips, said she could get real used to this ‘cause”

The bucolic evening continues, with the lovebirds sitting on the hood of the Chevy. After her initially frosty attitude towards country life, Thomas Rhett is excited to hear her musing that, after the night they've enjoyed, this is really about as “good as it gets”.

What has Thomas Rhett said about ‘Gone Country’?

In a 2024 interview with Billboard, TR sweetly revealed ‘Gone Country’ is one of his children's favourites from the new album, About a Woman, “[My] two oldest [daughters] are starting to form their own opinions on what they like. If they go to hip-hop class and a Luis Fonsi song comes on, that’s what they think is fire. Or they’ll hear kids at school talking about Luke Combs or Morgan Wallen. When it comes to my music, they’ve become a little bit of my little A&R team. On the way to school, I’m playing a new demo and I’m watching if they start moving or if they’re asking to hear it again. So in a way, they influence a lot of the music. They can point out a bop. They love ‘Gone Country,’ ‘Back to Blue’ and ‘Don’t Wanna Dance’”.

“Once she gone country, she never goin’ back

She feelin’ right at home with her boots up on my dash

When she go back to the city, that’s just to pack

She headed for a spot a little further off the map, yeah

-

She was shy when he met her in that bar

Said she was from a place stars don’t light up at dark

She said she wasn’t stayin’, she was only passing through

And he said okay I just want one little dance with you

-

Once she heard the band playin’, her hips started swangin’

Her lips started twangin’ from that whiskey she was drankin’

She told him she was thinkin’ the bar’s about to close

He said where you wanna go, she said anywhere but home

-

‘Cause once she gone country, she never goin’ back

She feelin’ right at home with her boots up on my dash

When she go back to the city, that’s just to pack

She headed for a spot a little further off the map, yeah

-

Once she gone country, she never goin’ back

She never goin’ back, no never goin’ back

-

He turned the key, and took her on a Chevy ride

That radio was on That Ain’t My Truck from ‘95

And she said wait I know this, this is Alabama right?

That boy he laughed so hard half of his truck was cross them double yellow lines

Leaned a smile up on her lips, said she could get real used to this ‘cause

-

Once she gone country, she never goin’ back

She feelin’ right at home with the boots up on my dash

When she go back to the city, that’s just a path

She headed for a spot a little further off the map, yeah

-

Once she gone country, she never goin’ back

She feelin’ right at home with the boots up on my dash

When she go back to the city, aw that’s just to pack

She headed for a spot a little further off the map, yeah

-

Once she gone country, aw once she gone country

Yeah, once she gone country

That girl ain’t never goin’, that girl ain’t never goin’ back

Ain’t never goin’ back”
