Post Malone has single handedly taken over the country genre since he began teasing that his debut country record was on its way.
With blockbuster singles that included 'I Had Some Help' with Morgan Wallen, 'Pour Me A Drink' with Blake Shelton and 'Guy For That' alongside Luke Combs, the stage was set for the highly-anticipated release of F-1 Trillion.
Already notching a hefty 18 songs, the standard version of the project includes features with the likes of Sierra Ferrell, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson and a running list of the who's who in the genre. However, in the middle of the album's release day on August 16, Post Malone shocked fans yet again with the news that he had an expanded version of the album up his sleeve.
One of the nine newly added songs from F-1 Trillion - Long Bed, 'Go To Hell' is a neo-traditional coded tune, if we've ever heard one. Sounding like something that George Strait might've cut in the '90s, Malone opines about his... complicated relationship with a significant other.
Written by Malone alongside Charlie Handsome and Louis Bell, who also take production credits for the entire project, 'Go To Hell' has a distinctively retro sound to it that oozes classic country from the first line to its closing bars.
Showing off Malone's deeper register throughout the verses as he digs for notes we don't often hear from the revered entertainer, it's a honky tonkin' good time that clocks in at just shy of four and a half minutes. This is largely due to the fact that, as was standard in the '90s band breakdown era, there are sections of the song that solely exist as a massive jam session, each musician able to show off and show out before the tune's end.
“There's just somethin' about that woman
I can't put my finger on
She makes it feel so right
Oh, when she does me wrong”
We find Malone in the midst of a precarious relationship. He can't quite pin down why, but for whatever reason, when she treats him badly, it just feels like everything is right with the world... a little saddistic, perhaps?
“She can tell you 'go to hell' and make you like it
She can lie to your face and make you buy it
Tell ya she's in love just to spite it
Serve ya humble pie and make ya try it
Smooth talkin' devil, can't deny it
She can tell you 'go to hell' and make you like it
Yeah, buddy”
Noting some of the spells she's put him under, he explains that she can say some of the meanest things, lie right to his face, talk down to him and the whole nine yards, yet there's something about her that is just so captivating and hypnotizing that she'll somehow convince you that you like it.
“Somehow she keeps you comin' back
Always wantin' more
You'll show her a diamond ring
And she'll show you the door”
It's a bit of a mystery as to how, but like a drug that you just can't quit, she always has our guy Post coming back for more of her vitriol... it just hurts so good.
However, it's clear that she has no interest in settling down or actually committing to him. Rather, she just likes playing games and leading him on.
"Her personality trait is gettin' even
Make you question everything that you believe in
Give you all that shit you think you're needin'
And take it right back when she's leavin'
She's a full mason jar of white lightnin'
She can tell you 'go to hell' and make you like it"
Her MO is one thing: "gettin' even." She's not worried about actually loving or caring about something, but simply messing with their head. She can make you question everything and keep returning for another hit.
She's unpredictable and inescapable, and Post is jumping in with both feet.
"Tell you 'go to hell' and make you like it
She can lie to your face and make you buy it
Tell ya she's in love just to spite it
Serve ya humble pie and make ya try it
She's a smooth talkin' devil, can't deny it
She can tell you 'go to hell' and make you like it
Ah, tell you 'go to hell' and make you like it"
Post Malone has not spoken about 'Go To Hell’ specifically just yet, but the New York native has touched more broadly on how welcoming the country music community has been to him since he announced his foray into the genre.
In an interview with Anthony Mason for CBS in Nashville, the ‘Chemical’ singer-songwriter shared, “Everyone here was so accepting and kind.” When Mason described this as a testament to Post Malone's genial, warm character, Posty immediately responded with an endearing dismissal, “I disagree. I think it's a testament to them.”
