*‘Doublewide’ didn't appear on streaming platforms until Monday, December 2nd
At long last, after a slew of teasers and hints at a release date, Gabriella Rose's infectious and extremely viral single, ‘Doublewide’, has been made available on streaming platforms.
On November 15th, the up-and-coming Nashville-based artist casually uploaded a brief clip of her performing a playful new song she'd just penned, with Rose light-heartedly captioning the clip, “heres a ridiculous one i wrote called double wide”.
It promptly spread like wildfire across TikTok, with the sound being used by over 27,000 videos at the time of writing, leaving fans clamouring desperately for the full version to be released.
Rose kept her followers updated throughout the process of completing ‘Doublewide’, with the fast-emerging artist revealing on November 27th, 2024 that she'd be dropping the eagerly awaited song as part of a five-song EP, Wait Til I Get My Money Up.
Unfortunately, there was a delay on the tracks appearing on streaming services, with the EP and ‘Doublewide’ eventually making their way onto DSPs on Monday, December 2nd.
‘Doublewide’ is a traditional-leaning earworm, with the stripped-back, rhythmic offering finding Gabriella Rose toasting her country roots through a flurry of witty, ‘90s-inspired punchlines.
When a 30-second clip of an unreleased song goes viral, it can be a double-edged sword for emerging artists. Although it lays a fantastic foundation for the song's rollout, it can also add pressure on making sure the rest of the track lives up to the viral snippet.
Thankfully, the studio rendition of ‘Doublewide’ does not disappoint, with Gabriella Rose's, sinuous and unashamedly country vocals snaking nimbly across a sparse instrumental.
The verses featured an intricate acoustic guitar, with Gabriella Rose injecting an extra jolt of electricity through the introduction of an energising banjo. By keeping ‘Doublewide’ acoustic, Rose maintains the enchantingly rustic, DIY feel of that original clip.
“I like good old-fashioned country music, something with a beat
I like a tall, lean man with Luccheses on his feet
I like the crackle of a bonfire under a big old mountain sky
I like my trailer like you like your women, ooh, double-wide”
Much of ‘Doublewide’ finds Gabriella Rose paying homage to her penchant for classic country music and all its associated trappings. She champions the old-school pioneers of the genre, before tipping her cap in the direction of a cowboy donning some stylish Lucchese boots. In the wake of her sharing this iconic lyric, the Lucchese team endearingly invited Rose to pick out some of her own cowboy boots.
Gabriella Rose goes on to paint a serene, bucolic picture of a night spent under the stars around a roaring bonfire, before delivering one of the many tongue-in-cheek punchlines of the track. She croons, “I like my trailer like you like your women, ooh, double-wide”.
“I put Betsy Rose over my bed frame, I put Jesus on my dash
Slap a T-bone steak on my Traeger, while singing to ‘The Man in Black’
I'll put a bullet through an old beer can, in denim with a real nice fit
I like men like I like my country music, ooh, big and rich”
The ‘Mississippi Mama’ crooner describes how she proudly hangs an image of her namesake and legendary country artist, Betsy Rose, over her bed, before emphasising her religious roots by placing a figure of Jesus on her truck's dashboard. Rose doubles-down on her love for country living, by celebrating the feeling of grilling a steak on a Traeger grill, while some classic Johnny Cash blasts from the speakers.
The rural imagery is extended, as Gabriella Rose outlines how you might find her in the backyard shooting old beer-cans, adorned in a Western denim outfit. Then, we get another hilarious punchline, as Rose pays homage to 2000s’ duo, Big & Rich, with a clever double-entendre, “I like men like I like my country music, ooh, big and rich”.
“I got more redneck inside my blood than DNA
I'm just like my daddy, I was made in the USA
If you don't like it, leave it, take your city ass home
I like what I like, because I'm country, country to the bone”
Rose stresses just how country she really is, joking that her blood consists of more ‘redneck’ than DNA, before crediting her father for passing down these down-home American values. She offers a warning for anyone criticising the way she chooses to live, advising any judgemental city folk to hit the highway if they don't like what they see.
“Who's sippin’ on a solo cup
I'll Mountain Dew it all night
He can rev me up just like a monster truck
That'll do it, alright”
Throughout these verses, Gabriella Rose offers some more details about her ideal partner, depicting them as being able to get her fired up in the way a monster truck revs its engine.
She describes drinking from a red solo cup, delivering a satisfying piece of wordplay pivoting around the soft drink ‘Mountain Dew’, as she underlines how she'll happily drink it all night.
“He can toss me up like a football
Take Peyton pound-for-pound
That's the kind of man make you wanna scream, ‘Woo, touchdown!’”
Gabriella Rose likens her dream man's ability to throw her in the air to the skills possessed by one of the Tennessee Volunteers’ most famous quarterbacks of all time, Peyton Manning.
“Heel, toe, turn me loose
Shake that honky-tonk caboose
Hips swing, do your thing
Boot scoot boogie ‘til the coyotes sing
‘Ah-ooh’
‘Ah-ooh’
‘Ah-ooh’”
The bridge for ‘Doublewide’ embodies the line-dance-ready feel of the track, with Gabriella Rose deftly weaving in references to two wildly popular ‘90s country anthems - Sammy Price's ‘Honky Tonk Caboose’ and Brooks & Dunn's ‘Boot Scootin’ Boogie’.
Alongside the first video she shared of ‘Doublewide’, Gabriella Rose modestly wrote, “heres a ridiculous one i wrote called double wide”, hinting that even she didn't think the song would become as colossal as it is now. In a later post, Rose heartwarmingly thanked her quickly burgeoning fanbase, “I HAVE NO WORDS. I have been frozen for the past five days i cant even believe it. Hi to all 400,000 of you new faces man oh man”. The country prodigy concluded, “Life is wild and God is good”.
