Braxton Keith - 'Cozy'

Label: Mustache Rides Records

Release Date: March 22nd, 2024

Album: TBA

Songwriters: Andrew Scorr Willis & Braxton Keith

Producers: Alex Torrez & David Dorn

The Background:

If you were to look up Braxton Keith on Spotify, you'd be met with a artist biography that says he's aiming to "bring back the traditional values of old school country music with a modern twist."

This goal is a familiar one in 2024, with the likes of Zach Top, Randall King, Jake Worthington and a slew of others hoping to do the same and making music that best fits under the umbrella of "neo-traditional."

Blending rootsy, honky-tonk sounds with contemporary hooks and traditional twang, you can hear the heart behind Keith's music dating all the way back to his debut single, 'Make Up Your Mind,' released in May 2019. Followed by successful tunes like 'Let Me Love You More,' 'Cold Hard Steel and Sand,' 'A Little Bit Closer' and plenty of others which have nabbed over 600,000 monthly listeners just on Spotify, the Midland, Texas native has found a little pocket of success with the flip of the calendar to 2024, thanks to a little song named 'Cozy.'

Released in mid-March, his first taste of new music for this year has connected with country listeners far and wide as he warns for certain people not to get too comfortable in their current predicaments.

The Sound:

Boasting more than 6 million streams on Spotify alone, 'Cozy' was written by Keith alongside Andrew Scorr Willis. Together the pair successfully created what can almost be described as a "pre-cheating" song.

Produced by Alex Torrez and David Dorn, the Texas twang htis you from the very first seconds as a strong, bluesy electric guitar plucks out the first notes. As the rest of the band fall in line, Keith's southern-singed vocals come in with great effect, keeping the slow-rolling ballad clipping along.

Sounding almost like something that could have been out of George Strait's songbook back in the '80s or '90s, the neo-traditional troubadour, accompanied by some light Spanish guitars, pulls on the energy of classic country in a way that feels utterly timeless.

The Meaning:

"You're holdin' her hand
Bet you're thinkin' that you're her only man
You're takin' her home
But you don't even realize you're alone
Don't get cozy
'Cause she already told me"

Throughout this song, Keith is speaking directly to an unnamed man who we quickly discover is dating – or at least trying to date – a woman that Keith himself has had relations with.

As this other guy is holding her hand and thinking he has it made, Keith shares the cold, hard truth that she isn't really committed to him, so he shouldn't get too comfortable.

"That she might have been kissin' on you
But she was still thinkin' 'bout me
Her eyes are open wide, I even got a wink
She might have been lovin' on you
But she said she'd leave you for me
Said she wouldn't pack a bag, she'd just get up and leave"

Retelling the things that the woman told Keith, he explains that while she was kissing the other guy, she was really thinking about Keith. Unfortunately, it seems as though the woman is playing this other guy for a fool.

The final nail in the coffin, Keith admits that regardless of what this other guy thinks or how well it might be going between the two of them, the woman has told Keith over and over that she'd leave old what's his name in a heartbeat to reunite with the mustachioed Texan.

"Hope you didn't tell
Your mama that things were going well
I hope you didn't blow
Money on a ring just to hear a 'no'
And don't get cozy
'Cause she already told me"

Driving his point home, Keith tells the other man that he hopes he hasn't been going around all wide-eye and hopeful in love to his friends and family, because he's quickly going to find that he's been taken advantage of.

Similarly, Keith sympathizes with the guy and hopes that he didn't just go spend some serious change on an engagement ring, because the woman is never going to settle down and say "yes" to him.

"That she might have been kissin' on you
But she was still thinkin' 'bout me
Her eyes are open wide, I even got a wink
She might have been lovin' on you
But she said she'd leave you for me
Said she wouldn't pack a bag, she'd just get up and leave"

What has Braxton Keith said about 'Cozy'?

Since its release in March of 2024, not much has been shared about the viral tune from Keith.

Appearing on RFD-TV to speak with Suzanne Alexander about his Texas upbringing and music journey thus far, he also shared a bit of the backstory for how 'Cozy' came to be.

"Most of the time [when I write songs], it's from me watching somebody else go through things, which is cool. I don't have to write about myself all the time. I can write about the fans or anyone's situation," Keith offered.

"'Cozy' came from one of my friends going through a similar situation to that and I got to witness it. And I got a good story out of it!," he added with a smile.

You're holdin' her hand
Bet you're thinkin' that you're her only man
You're takin' her home
But you don't even realize you're alone
Don't get cozy
'Cause she already told me

That she might have been kissin' on you
But she was still thinkin' 'bout me
Her eyes are open wide, I even got a wink
She might have been lovin' on you
But she said she'd leave you for me
Said she wouldn't pack a bag, she'd just get up and leave

Hope you didn't tell
Your mama that things were going well
I hope you didn't blow
Money on a ring just to hear a "no"
And don't get cozy
'Cause she already told me

That she might have been kissin' on you
But she was still thinkin' 'bout me
Her eyes are open wide, I even got a wink
She might have been lovin' on you
But she said she'd leave you for me
Said she wouldn't pack a bag, she'd just get up and leave

She might have been kissin' on you
But she was still thinkin' 'bout me
Her eyes are open wide, I even got a wink
She might have been lovin' on you
But she said she'd leave you for me
Said she wouldn't pack a bag, she'd just get up and leave
Oh, she'd just get up and leave

You're holdin' her hand
Bet you're thinkin' that you're her only man
