The night before her set on the very same stage, Charlie Worsham had introduced Colbie Caillat at the Indigo2 for CMA Songwriters Series by telling the audience he felt like she’d always been making country music in some way.

Returning the following afternoon, Caillat showed a packed crowd what Worsham had been referring to. Songs like ‘Realize’, from her debut 2007 pop album, Coco, sit perfectly alongside new songs like current country radio hit ‘I’ll Be Here’ - which she performed in London, sadly without Sheryl Crow. It makes you wonder if Colbie Caillat hadn’t just been a country singer that we just didn’t call one all this time.

“I realise I have so many ballads”, Caillat joked with the audience halfway through her set, as a pedal steel sighed into the intro for ‘Try’. “If you guys are in the mood to party, I promise we’ll liven it up in a minute”.

“I’m grateful this song has helped me,” she continued, telling the audience about how she had gone into a writers room with the songwriters Kenneth B. Edmonds, Antonio Lamar Dixon and Jason Bradford Reeves feeling anxious about what they would think of her idea, only to find that the three of them all had the same anxieties as her. “I hope it helps anyone who has ever worried, because we’re supposed to be different”.

She didn’t need to worry about being different at C2C Festival. It’s what makes her stand apart among her contemporaries and her lean into country all the more enchanting.
