Tucker Wetmore - ‘Break First’

Release Date: October 4, 2024

Album: Waves On A Sunset

Songwriters: Michael Tyler, Matt Roy, Lauren Hungate and Matt Dragstrem

Producer: Chris LaCorte

The Background:

Tucker Wetmore has taken country music by storm over the last several months, releasing songs like ‘Wine Into Whiskey’ and ‘Wind Up Missin’ You’ to viral acclaim. Now, he's showing fans what else he has up his sleeve.

On Friday (Oct. 4), the quickly rising star dropped his debut EP, Waves on a Sunset, an 8-track project that finds the artist flexing his versatility while also further showcasing the talent that has kept him on top lately.

'Break First' is among the recent additions to Wetmore's catalogue. The infectious new anthem is set to soundtrack your next moment of indecision.

The Sound:

From the jump, 'Break First' is an energetic country rocker. The synth-flecked melody is powered by pop-punk-inspired drums and peppered with the silvery whine of electric strings throughout. The racing arrangement holds a lot of fire and attitude, the perfect sound to score a romance or a rager.

The Meaning:

"I drank last night, I stayed too long
We got into a fight, she's on her last straw
I said I changed, she rolled her eyes
She said I said that last time"

'Break First' finds Wetmore caught in a tug of war, torn between settling down and still being the life of the party.

The song opens with the star coming down from an all-nighter, his partner left frustrated with his bachelor-informed proclivities. He wants to change, but he also doesn't. Throughout the song, he battles with this internal struggle.

He wants another kiss and another beer. We wants his cake and he'd like to eat it too. He realizes he can't have it both ways, so he sings, "I'm in a tight spot, don't know where it goes from here..."

Will she put me in a church, will I put her in a bar?
Will she put me back together, will I tear that girl apart?
It's only one of two things, will she want my last name?
Or wanna drag it through the dirt?
Will I make her mine or just make her miss me?
Right now, it's lookin' like 50-50
If it's gonna be my habits or that heart of hers
Which one is gonna break first?

He's looking down that fork in the road like the barrel of a gun, knowing he has a decision to make. Will he choose love over last calls?

He sums up the predicament perfectly, singing, "She wants to stay in, I wanna go out / I know what happens if I go downtown / She's gonna get pissed, I guess that's true / Can't have my whiskey and drink it too."

In the end, it's a toss-up between her heart and his habits. The question is: "Which one is gonna break first?"

What has Tucker Wetmore said about ‘Break First'?

While Wetmore hasn't gone into great detail about 'Break First', during a conversation with Holler, he did explain that all the tracks on Waves on a Sunset have a purpose.

“It was all very intentional”, he offered, “I hope people really dive into the purpose behind every song placement, especially at the end. When the album comes next year, they'll see, ‘Oh, that's why he chose ‘Mister Miss Her’. I'm going to do something with the album too, where it's like, ‘Oh, this is why’. It's all storytelling. It's almost like songwriting within songs. I'm not going to say what my whole idea behind the album is yet, but what is coming on Friday is very intentional”.

I drank last night, I stayed too long
We got into a fight, she's on her last straw
I said I changed, she rolled her eyes
She said I said that last time

And I kinda want another kiss, wouldn't mind another beer
And I'm in a tight spot, don't know where it goes from here

Will she put me in a church, will I put her in a bar?
Will she put me back together, will I tear that girl apart?
It's only one of two things, will she want my last name?
Or wanna drag it through the dirt?
Will I make her mine or just make her miss me?
Right now, it's lookin' like 50-50
If it's gonna be my habits or that heart of hers
Which one is gonna break first?

She wants to stay in, I wanna go out
I know what happens if I go downtown
She's gonna get pissed, I guess that's true
Can't have my whiskey and drink it too

Will she put me in a church, will I put her in a bar?
Will she put me back together, will I tear that girl apart?
It's only one of two things, will she want my last name?
Or wanna drag it through the dirt?
Will I make her mine or just make her miss me?
Right now, it's lookin' it's lookin' like 50-50
If it's gonna be my habits or that heart of hers
Which one is gonna break first?

And I kinda want another kiss, wouldn't mind another beer
And I'm in a tight spot, don't know where it goes from here

Which one is gonna break first?

Which one is gonna break first?
