Earlier this year, Miranda Lambert ushered in a new era. Having inked a deal with Republic Records – a label where her desires and her vision were understood – the 'Tequila Does' hitmaker found herself refreshed, newly empowered and inspired to create the music she has always strived for.
What has resulted since has been a string of well-received singles, like 'Wranglers', 'Dammit Randy' and 'No Man's Land', all eventually, paving the way for her tenth solo studio release, Postcards From Texas.
The new album is full of Lambert's trademark fire and sass, especially when it comes to the record's liquored-up opus, 'Bitch On The Sauce', a gritty ballad that joins the artist's growing list of classic drinking songs.
'Bitch On The Sauce' begins in a shimmer of strings before igniting into a blistering symphony of sharp electric guitar, bright mandolin and shuddering bass. It's the perfect foot-tapper, full of heat and attitude, to accompany that burning question: Are we in love, or are we just drunk?
"Does the whiskey make you miss me
Cuz every time I take a sip I think about you
I start dialin’ but I don’t call
Are you sittin’ there lookin’ at the phone not callin’ me too
The heart is a bitch on the sauce gon’ do what it do"
'Bitch On The Sauce' is one more Postcards From Texas offering that finds Lambert ignoring her better judgment when it comes to love, but this time she's blaming it on the alcohol.
The fiery tune kicks off with that usual whiskey-fueled fumble, the heart and the head at odds with the age-old query: to call or not to call?
Ready to drunk dial an ex, Lambert stops herself to ponders this question, wondering if that old flame is really worth reigniting. As the song goes on, though, we learn this internal tug-of-war is nothing new.
According to the artist, "This happens every time I crack open up that bottle / And I light that cigarette / And it’s like aww shit here come trouble."
And why? Because "the heart is a bitch on the sauce", or rather her heart is the one that is excessively drunk, and apparently, the heart is going to do what it is going to do.
"Everything about you says don’t do that
With the Devil on my shoulder sayin’ don’t look back
And I wonder what spell are we under
Are we in love or we just drunk"
She admits to knowing better, but sings of being under some spell. Is it love? Who's to say? Is it the alcohol? Maybe.
Her head is telling her not to go there, recognizing full well that she'll wake up in the morning feeling more conflicted than she does now. In the end, though, "the heart is a bitch on the sauce," and to Lambert, that means she might as well go for it.
While Lambert hasn't explicitly shared anything about 'Bitch On The Sauce (Just Drunk)', she has explained that Postcards from Texas is meant to serve as a love letter of sorts from her to her listeners.
From commenting on toxic relationships and the need to be free, to more profound sentiments on life and love, the 14-song album is full of lessons learned and words of wisdom.
“There’s a lot of bad decisions on this record, but that’s part of growing up," she offered. "It’s part of the experience, that human experience is figuring it out. You don’t learn from things going great. Throughout this record, there’s a lot of tenderness and living in the moment of the pain. It’s not glorifying it, but explaining."

That front porch looks like Heaven
But I know in the mornin’ it’s gonna feel more like hell
But I drive up anyway
Cuz the good lord knows this girl can’t help herself
Yeah a heart is a bitch on the sauce so I might as well
