Mark Ambor - ‘Belong Together’

Release Date: February 16th, 2024

Songwriters: Mark Ambor

Producers: Mark Ambor & Noel Zancanella

The Background:

If, like us, you enjoy a (somewhat) healthy dose of TikTok from time to time, you likely heard Mark Ambor’s song ‘Belong Together’, making waves on platform ahead of its release on February 16.

First teasing the tune on December 27, ‘Belong Together’ built a strong sense of momentum before it hit streaming services, with Ambor gaining an impressive following of almost a million on TikTok. Now, the song is still seeing success, becoming a key part of the social media sensation’s setlist during his 2024 headlining tour, as well as surging into the Top 20 on the Spotify Viral 50 US and Global charts.

The Sound:

The upbeat sound of ‘Belong Together’ helps accentuate the joyful meaning behind its euphoric, rose-tinted lyrics, beginning with some breezy acoustic guitar plucking.

Leaning into folk and Americana – as opposed to Ambor’s typical pop style – the song pivots around the playful acoustic guitar, which combines with the emphatic drums, creating a tune that conjures up the image of Ambor skipping around the kitchen with his significant other. No significant other, no problem; we can vouch that even humming the catchy song to yourself is enough to make you smile.

The Meaning:

“I know sleep is friends with death
But maybe I should get some rest
'Cause I've been out here working all damn day
Blueberries and butterflies
The pretty things that greet my eyes
When you call and I say, “I'm on my way” (One, two!)”

Opening up the song, Ambor sings that “sleep is friends with death” – given the fact that the two are closely related to one another – however, he will be taking part in sleeping nonetheless, as he has been “out here workin' all damn day” and is exhausted.

While the protagonist's career is unclear, the narrator is clearly burnt out by his occupation. Yet he sees a shift in his overall attitude as soon as he gets a call from his significant other. Ambor uses the metaphor of “Blueberries and butterflies / The pretty things that greet my eyes” to underline his feelings of happiness and giddiness.

“You and me belong together
Like cold iced tea and warmer weather
Where we lay out late underneath the pines
And we still have fun when the sun won't shine
You and me belong together all the time”

The narrator then croons warmly about his love for his significant other, admitting that they are a perfect pair, just like “cold iced tea and warmer weather.”

Continuing the summery feel of the track, Ambor emphasises that he and his partner have fun together “all the time”, even partaking in activities as simple and innocent as laying “underneath the pines” and soaking up the great outdoors until sundown.

“Spilling wine and homemade drinks
We throw a cheers, the worries sink
Damn it, it's so good to be alive (woo)
We know that we don't got much
But, then again, it's just enough
To always find a way for a good time”

The second verse describes what seemingly happens after sundown, as Ambor and his lover have not a worry in the world, drinking wine and reflecting on the fact that “it's so good to be alive” and in love with one another. Here, he reflects on how little time he has with the love of his life – due to what appears to be his jam-packed work schedule – however, he cherishes each and every moment nonetheless.

“This love is all we need
Oh, we've got so much
You and me, oh”

While he might be feeling burnt out, the narrator underlines that “love is all we need,” and how lucky he feels that love is so plentiful in his current relationship. After another repeat of the chorus, ‘Belong Together’ is closed out with an extended outro.

What has Mark Ambor said about ‘Belong Together’?

After from teasing fans with ‘Belong Together’ snippets for weeks on end via TikTok, Mark Ambor shared what was seemingly a dedication to the song on the release day.

Accompanying a jubilant solo shot, he wrote in an Instagram post on February 16th, 2024, “I think it’s cool how being around people you love can change your outlook on life. Hearing their voice after a long day, seeing their smile, laughing with them can take a bad day and make it better. This one’s about the people in my life that are most important to me. ‘Belong Together’ is out now! Hope this one makes ya smile!”

Not only did the fast-emerging New York singer-songwriter pay tribute to ‘Belong Together’ upon its release, he referenced it once again while teasing his upcoming album. In an Instagram post on March 28th, he shared, “It’s honestly so hard to process how this feels. Most of the songs I make happen alone in my basement and are just a reflection of me having fun. I love building something from scratch, putting everything I am into it, and then having it to listen back to. I remember ‘Belong Together’ came so easy. I would sing it to my walls and dance around alone pretending to be singing it to a room full of people. Every day for the past six months has felt like the craziest dream. You being here means more than you’ll ever know. Thanks for being part of this world with me. Currently working on getting you the best album I can make. Stay tuned”.
