Country star-turned-pop dabbler Maren Morris may currently be on the outs with the country genre, but that doesn't mean we can't still partake in her latest victory: 'Bed No Breakfast'.
Over the last few months, the 'Humble Quest' hitmaker has been faithfully teasing tunes from her forthcoming album, Dreamsicle, and 'Bed No Breakfast' marks the pop-fueled collection's latest single.
The new tune, with its thinly-veiled allusions to booty calls and one night stands, is far from subtle, but it makes for an honest and revealing look at the artist as she embarks on this new journey, paved in pop.
'Bed No Breakfast' is all tip-toeing bedroom pop. Much of the tune is punctuated by shimmery sashaying sounds and is effortlessly carried on Morris' breezy croon. The arrangement is sleepy and seductive, the song's eye-batting words only further driven home by a come-hither composition.
"Hey, that was great, we should do this again soon
Hey, by the way, weren't those your keys in your pants on the floor in the other room?"
'Bed No Breakfast' opens on what listeners can assume is a postcoital scene. Morris is quick to comment on the quality of the act, but she is even quicker to remark on what should come next. A goodbye.
The sun is coming up, meaning the night that she and her companion shared is rapidly coming to a close. With lines like "Won't you sleep better at your place?" and "I hope you enjoyed your stay," it immediately becomes clear what's next...
"A five star review is expected (Ah)
I check every box on your checklist (Ah)
Those thousand count sheets ain't for resting
Excuse my directness
This is a bed no breakfast, mm"
Morris isn't looking to cuddle and spoon. She got what she wanted and now it's time for her partner to leave, go back to their place and do their own thing. The artist is keeping them well at arms' length, making it known that her bed is only good for one thing and they shouldn't expect anything more from her.
"I'm all out of eggs and I'm all out of coffee," she sings, doubling down on the fact that she has nothing else to offer them. In the song, she even adds that she's perfectly fine without a text or a call. She has obviously gotten what she wanted and now she's ready for them to go.
Likely without putting too much stock into the words, she ends the song how she started it, singing:
"Hey, that was great, we should do this again soon"
Hey, that was great, we should do this again soon
Hey, by the way, weren't those your keys in your pants on the floor in the other room?
Sun is coming through the curtains, think I heard a bird chirping
Won't you sleep better at your place?
Ain't no turning down the service, you'll be happy, you deserved this
I hope you enjoyed your stay
But you can't stay (Ah)
A five star review is expected (Ah)
I check every box on your checklist (Ah)
Those thousand count sheets ain't for resting
Excuse my directness
This is a bed no breakfast, mm
I'm all out of eggs and I'm all out of coffee
Don't mean the next week, don't want you to call me
I know my bedroom feels something like Heaven
I know you're tired, I know you're tempted
Sun is coming through the curtains, heard another bird chirping (Hmm)
Won't you sleep better at your place? (Won't you sleep at your place?)
Tell me why you're still flirting
Kiss my lips, say what again
Don't know how else I can say
You can't stay (Ah)
A five star review is expected (Ah)
I check every box on your checklist (Ah)
Those thousand count sheets ain't for resting
Excuse my directness
This is a bed no breakfast, mm
This is a bed no breakfast, mm
Hey, that was great, we should do this again soon
