‘Bartender in Destin’ came as a surprise release on Riley Green’s latest EP, Midtown Sessions.
A sudden drop on Friday, July 11, the EP offers stripped-back versions of some of Riley's most beloved songs, 'Change My Mind', 'Worst Way' and 'Jesus Saves', a cover of Tim McGraw's 'Cowboy In Me' and brand new song ‘Bartender in Destin’.
Written by Nick Walsh and Sam Banks, and produced by Riley's regular co-writing buddy Erik Dylan, the song is the first new music recorded and released by Green since his 2024 album Don't Mind If I Do.
'Bartender in Destin' closes the 5-track record with a beachy, blues feel. It perfectly captures Green’s brooding mood and smooth vocals in a catchy, summery way.
Within the song, Green paints a picture of a lonesome soul searching for some escapism at the bottom of a glass. In an attempt to drink away the blues, he meets an effortlessly cool bartender that captures his attention – and ultimately his heart. Supposedly just a ‘love bender’, we’re left with the possibility that this meet-cute was something worth revisiting.
"I went on a whim
I was just trying to find
Me a new place to chase cheap tequila with lime
Heard a half-drunk steel drum Jimmy Buffett tune
Lucky me I found a seat on the last bar stool
When I saw who was asking what I was drinkin’
My heart damn near hit the floor"
With no expectations of finding a girl, Green paints us a protagonist who is looking for a seat and a drink.
The melody of the song suggests he’s chasing some blues and interested only in drinking them away in an unsuspecting location. And unsuspecting he is, when, soaking up the classic country – potentially a karaoke half-drunk rendition – our guy is taken aback by his bartender.
"She wore a blue bandana and a Budweiser tank top
Had a boat anchor tattoo and a smile that made my world stop
I couldn’t get enough
Held on to every second
Went on a beach love bender with a dive bartender in Destin"
Simple and seductive, this girl has all the hallmarks of a happy-go-lucky dive bartender.
She’s cool with her bandana and tattoo, effortless in her Budweiser top and our main man is infatuated from the first second. The noise of the bar and the eyes of the onlookers disappear, leaving the two of them, their chemistry and, of course, a bar full of drinks.
"She grew up in Alabama
She cheers for the ‘Gators
Her daddy runs a charter
When he ain’t drinkin Makers
She loves AC/DC and a midnight Marlborough
Yeah sittin’ here smoking one at night makes me miss that girl"
Picking up on the nuances of her life – her favourite band, her father’s drink, where she grew up – suggests that the two of them talked all night long.
It conjures the image of a dimly lit room, the two of them either side of the bar, making eyes at each other between serves and sharing drinks over pockets of conversation. Back at home, one drag on a cigarette takes him back to that night with fond memories and a few ‘what ifs’.
"With a blue bandana and a Budweiser tank top
Had a boat anchor tattoo and a smile that makes my world stop
I couldn’t get enough
Held on to every second
Went on a beach love bender with a dive bartender in Destin
I must have fell for her cos I stayed ‘til closing time
She must have fell for me cos I never spent a dime
She wore a blue bandana and a Budweiser tank top
Had a boat anchor tattoo and that smile made my world stop
I couldn’t get enough
Held on to every second
Went on a beach love bender with a dive bartender in Destin"
As the song closes, we’re front row for the realisation that the ‘love bender’ was more than lust.
Perfect memories and maximum anticipation send this troubadour back to Destin, to find the girl that’s been on his mind ever since he left.
Revealing the release of the Midtown Sessions EP on Social Media, Green stated "I have always loved the acoustic versions of songs so I cut a few for y’all just the way I wrote them. Midnight tonight, Change My Mind, Worst Way, Jesus Saves, Cowboy In Me, and a brand new song Bartender In Destin are comin’ out.. All acoustic."
While he's not said anything specific about 'Bartender in Destin' so far, I'm a pretty big fan of the way the guitar melody sinks into an easy-livin', sunset romance. It's Buffett vibes - and Green has the voice for it - all sultry, smoky and a little playful.
