It's not every day a wedding gift helps a singer/songwriter craft their next album, but that was Charlie Worsham's experience.
The former Old Crow Medicine Show member received a beautiful guitar from country musician Vince Gill, when he got married in 2018.
When it came time to record the follow-up to his 2017 album Beginning of Things, his producer challenged him to use one instrument rather than a different guitar on different tracks.
"When I went to record ‘Fist [Through This Town]’, one of the things Jay [Joyce] challenged me to do was to stick with one guitar while recording", Worsham told Holler as part of the Cuts the Deepest series, which details the songs that most influence particular musicians.
"He said, "Man, B.B. King has one guitar. Keith Richards has one guitar. Stick to one guitar and find your sound that way". Of course, the guitar I used was the one Vince gave me.
That guitar also shows up in Worsham's 'Fist Through This Town' video, where he can be seen carrying the golden guitar case around.
Gill, of course, made Worsham's list of songs that most influenced him, as did Paul Simon and Eric Church. "Vince shaped my guitar playing - he was my first real-life guitar hero", he said. Check out the full list.
Worsham even recounted saving up to buy his first guitar and how often he practiced Gill's song 'Liza Jane' on it. "I spent hours playing 'Liza Jane'", he said. "So much of my “chicken pickin’” style comes from playing that song, so it plays a very important part in my story".
The two musicians have toured and regularly performed together, including at the Grand Ole Opry. Worsham recently followed his up single 'Fist Through This Town' with a new song, 'Believe in Love'. You can watch the video below.
