The rollout for The Lumineers fifth studio album, Automatic, continues to pick up pace, with Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites releasing two brand new tracks today (January 29th).
The arrival of ‘So Long’ and ‘You're All I Got’ follows the anthemic lead single, ‘Same Old Song’, which dropped earlier in the month and officially launched the duo's Automatic era.
Endearingly, ‘You're All I Got’ serves as a tribute to Schultz and Fraites’ friendship and working partnership of over a decade, with the song following a protagonist who realises just how dependent they are on someone else (“You're all I got, you're all that I got / And I can't give it up / Fillin all the holes in us / You're all that I got”).
The Lumineers previewed both ‘You're All I Got’ and ‘So Long’ during their spellbinding performance at London's Hoxton Hall on January 17th, with Schultz introducing the former by emphasising how much he appreciates and leans on Fraites.
‘So Long’, meanwhile, explores a darker emotional landscape, with Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites employing an array of visceral imagery as they delve into the feeling of being stuck in a rut (“Flies are on the food / Sleeping with your shoes on the sofa / Blinds down in the day / Won't somebody break up my coma?”).
Speaking ahead of the songs’ release, Wesley Schultz’ has touched on the recording process for ‘So Long’, explaining, “We truly did that song live, in the moment. I think there’s a magic in there, and that’s what you hear coming off that track”.
As for ‘You're All I Got’, Schultz reflected on the vocal discipline it requires for him to take on that track, “It’s on the edge of where I can hit a note, so you feel that tension. When you’re saying to someone, ‘You’re all I got’, it carries that same raw emotion”.
Automatic arrives on Valentine's Day (February 14th), with the highly anticipated album set to include previously teased fan-favourites such as ‘A**hole’ and ‘Plasticine’.
