Jelly Roll and Alexandra Kay - ‘Leave the Light On'

Songwriters - Jelly Roll, Hillary Lindsey, Jesse Frasure, Blake Pendergrass and Jessie Jo Dillon

Official Release Date: Friday, July 19, 2024

Album: Twisters: The Album

The Background:

Just as Jelly Roll is currently in demand in the world of country music and beyond, the 'Son of a Sinner' star was also highly sought-after during the compiling of the Twisters film soundtrack.

The artist appears on the star-studded project not once but twice. Where his 'Dead End Road' adds a rock-fueled flair to the collection, his Alexandra Kay-assisted 'Leave the Light On' infuses the album with his trademark profundity.

The latter track, featuring the 'How Do We Go' country vocalist who will soon join Jelly Roll on a leg of his Beautifully Broken tour, is among the soundtrack's most emotive ballads, flush with striking declarations of love.

The Sound:

'Leave the Light On' comes to life with a few deep and solemn strings before being brightened by a layer of earnest keys. Aside from the occasional guitar-talking flourish, the song's opening is rather sturdy and subdued, letting Jelly Roll's leading vocals shine.

The tune goes on like that until the chorus explodes into a hail of sharpened steel, rounded rhythms and hallelujah harmonies that end up carrying the song to its final crescendo.

The Meaning:

Never really was one for relationships
I let love sail away
Always been the first one callin' it quits
Cowboys never stay
All this ramblin' and wanderin' is all that I know
But you make me feel right at home

Jelly Roll opens 'Leave the Light On' by noting his past romances have been marred by his own doing, often self-sabotaging by either throwing in the towel early or simply leaving.

He justifies this trail of broken hearts by assuring that "cowboys never stay," adding that a life of "ramblin' and wanderin'" is the only kind he knows. That is, until now.

He reveals he's finally found someone who makes him feel at home and makes him want to stick around, singing...

You gave this lonely life some meaning
Got this non-believer believin'
Oh, when my blind-folded heart is in the darkest of dark
And my soul is searchin' to see
You leave a light on for me
You leave the light on for me

This new love has given him a fresh perspective and a newfound purpose, transforming him into a believer that love can actually last. This special someone has illuminated his life with something that won't soon be extinguished.

Ain't it crazy, baby? In a flip of a switch
You get me out of my head
Ooh, and when the shadows are coming in quick
You threw 'em right off the edge
Oh, I still get lost, yeah, but I don't get gone
'Cause you always lead me back home

When Alexandra Kay takes over, she marvels at how powerful this kind of love is. Like the flip of a switch, it has the ability to alter her way of thinking and feeling, making it possible for her to get out of her own head and away from the things that used to shadow her direction in life. Now, even if she feels lost, she finds peace in knowing that she can always find her way home.

Together, Jelly Roll and Kay close out the tune, singing with conviction: "When my blind-folded heart is in the darkest of dark / And my soul is searchin' to see / You leave a light on for me."

While they may stray at times, it's never for long because, in love, they've found the place where they belong. They can go about their lives knowing that, come darkness or deviation, there will always be a light on to lead them back to their loved ones.

Darkest of dark

Oh, you leave the light on
You leave the light on for me
Oh, you leave the light on
You leave a light on

You leave the light on

And my soul is searchin' to see
You leave a light on for me
You leave the light on
You leave the light on for me
Leave the light on

You leave the light on
Whoa
