Sometimes, the only destination you long to be is absolutely nowhere. Especially when the days become hard to bare and the nights grow even more so, that desire to get away only intensifies.
Lanie Gardner knows the feeling all too well. It's one she's put into words on her latest single, 'Somewhere, Nowhere in Carolina'. Released Friday (Oct. 4), the dazzling acoustic number chronicles her nascent voyage into the music industry, an experience that has, at times, left her disconnected, dejected and yearning to get back to the place she calls home and the person she was there.
“I was defeated and wanted nothing more than to be ‘somewhere’ back home and ‘nowhere’ in my career,” Gardner shared of the song in a statement.
In the stripped-down but striking offering, she sings, "Sometimes I’d rather be / Catching fireflies than love bugs / Telling stories instead of lies / Skipping stones instead of getting stoned / To try to find some peace of mind / Hopping ditches instead of planes / Pulling wagons instead of these chains / Sometimes instead of keeping this up / I’d rather be somewhere, nowhere in Carolina".
Through penning 'Somewhere, Nowhere in Carolina', she was able to reconnect with herself, reaffirming her purpose and igniting a newfound inspiration along the way. “Today, I write songs for my fans, my friends, and my family who pulled me through such a dark time," she added. "But that day… I wrote a song for me.”
Following the recent devastation of hurricane Helene, however, 'Somewhere, Nowhere in Carolina' has taken on a new meaning for the artist, having witnessed the effects the storm had on her hometown of Burnsville, North Carolina.
"This is a bittersweet moment for me, I pictured it differently as I prepared and recorded these songs over the past several months," she shared on social media upon the song's release. "These songs tell my story— they are about where I grew up, my family, things I experienced. Now all I have are the memories and these songs which were written in Burnsville. I’m thankful for everyone who has been along with me for this journey— I can’t wait for you all to hear this music. I’ll have a few surprises for you along the way. Please pray for North Carolina and those who are impacted by hurricane Helene across our country."
'Somewhere, Nowhere in Carolina' is set to appear on Gardner's highly anticipated debut album, A Songwriter's Diary. The collection, slated to arrive on Oct. 25, will feature 10 of the star's entirely self-penned tunes.
