Kimmi Bitter has treated listeners to acoustic versions of three irresistibly traditional-leaning tracks, as part of Bitter's Holler Nashville Session, presented by Montucky Cold Snacks.
Accompanied by the low, compelling hum of a double-bass and the glorious twang of an electric guitar, in addition to her own acoustic guitar, Kimmi Bitter demonstrates why she's considered by many to be spearheading a ‘60s revival in today's country scene.
The first of her trio of performances, the aptly titled ‘Old School’, finds Bitter laying down her mission statement through a refreshingly jaunty, uptempo offering. The track appears on Bitter's lauded debut album of the same name, which dropped in March.
The studio version is enchanting, but hearing this traditional country anthem in the comparatively raw setting of this Holler Nashville Session, presented by Montucky Cold Snacks, accentuates the retro-inspired feel of ‘Old School’, with Kimmi Bitter crooning warmly, “I'm just a dang fool for that old school / Take me back to that tried and true / Sound of rhythm and blues, I tell ya old school / Makes my old soul feel brand new”.
‘Aquamarine’ is a stark shift in tone from Kimmi Bitter and the Westside Twang - the name of her duo of backing band-members - while still maintaining the decidedly classic, nostalgic ambience that pervades the entirety of Bitter's Old School record.
The hazy cry of the electric guitar and the easy rhythm of the double-bass blends with Kimmi Bitter's captivating vocals, which float happily across the instrumental. It all fuses together to paint a soothing, sun-soaked image as Bitter assures the listener, “I've got no worries, I know no time / We're in no hurry / In paradise, aquamarine”.
The last of the stellar trio of tracks, ‘My Grass is Blue’, explores a more melancholic atmosphere, with Kimmi Bitter's deliberate, introspective delivery bringing an additional layer of anguish to the fore. Bitter flips the age-old phrase about the grass being greener, by depicting hers as being ‘blue’ due to her crushing heartbreak.
Kimmi Bitter's Holler Nashville Session, presented by Montucky Cold Snacks, was captured at Music City's picturesque Riverside Revival venue. Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard served as directors, while Holler's Ross Jones took the helm for the production.
