Country up-and-comer, Fancy Hagood, has performed a trio of evocative offerings as part of his new Holler Nashville Session, which is presented by Montucky Cold Snacks.
Led by his performance of the quietly reassuring, ‘Isn't That Life’, the Arkansas singer-songwriter showcases his powerful storytelling ability and his captivating, sinuous vocals.
By stripping back the instrumentation on ‘Isn't That Life’, ‘Ever Really Ready’ and ‘Losing Game’, Hagood highlights his moving lyrical flourishes and eye-catching delivery.
‘Isn't That Life’ finds Fancy Hagood examining a break-up through an optimistic lens, as he chooses to seek out the silver linings and cherish the time he spent with his ex, rather than opting for bitterness. It contains irresistible, glinting nuggets of wordplay such as “Got a garden full of weeds from the seeds of doubt”.
‘Ever Really Ready’ is the most energising and overtly catchy of these three new tracks, with Fancy Hagood toasting the thrill of those first-date jitters coupled with the hesitance of entering a new relationship after heartbreak. The lyrics, as ever, are perceptive and touching, but they're wrapped in an infectious, vibrant melody that allows Hagood to really show off his vocal dexterity in this acoustic session.
‘Losing Game’ flips the script and follows a protagonist that is once again in the throes of romance, as on ‘Ever Really Ready’, but this time, he's all too aware it's a toxic situation. Hagood likens his addiction to their dark romance to the high of being on drugs, with the bright, upbeat strum of his guitar serving as a thin veil over the pain he feels.
‘Ever Really Ready’, ‘Isn't That Life’ and ‘Losing Game’ act as the first three tracks to appear on Fancy Hagood's keenly awaited new album, American Spirit, which arrived on Friday, October 25th. The lauded project is the latest reminder of Hagood's colossal potential, with the ‘Good Grief’ crooner cementing himself as one of the most impressive, discerning songsmiths in Nashville's next generation.
