Born and raised in Nashville, Teddy and the Rough Riders were brought up on Music City’s country music history and having made their way up through the DIY rock community spearheaded by the likes of Jack White and JEFF the Brotherhood, they've been joyfully bridging the gap between both camps ever since.
As they pull from country rock’s past and piece it playfully back together with a whole new energy and a burning fire in their souls, their sound feels like the next stop on a lineage that runs from Gram Parsons through to The Band and New Riders of the Purple Sage and on down into Hoyt Axton, JJ Cale and Dough Sahm, before ending up where we are today with bands like Nude Party, Mike and the Moonpies and The Pink Stones.
Holler fell hard for Teddy and The Rough Riders’ Margo Price produced self-titled debut and the love affair continues with its forthcoming follow up, Down Home, due out on Appalachia Record Co on October 11th.
As luck would have it the band’s European and UK tour with Emily Nenni touches down in London tonight, so what better way to celebrate than with a big fat juicy premiere of their latest taster of the new album, ‘Hippies.’
"'Hippies make the best country music,' is something said to me by an audience member after a show,” Jack Quiggins explains about the song. “This man was what we would call a punisher, basically someone who punishes you for showing kindness and putting up with their whims. He continued to berate me about my long hair and demeanor then decided to end the conversation with his praise and the infamous line used in the song. Who knows, maybe he’s not wrong."
The evidence seems to suggest he isn't. 'Hippies' is premiering exclusively on Holler below.
Rattling along like an eighteen wheeler with its brakes cut, ‘Hippies’ is a mix of chugging barroom boogie and squelchy glam rock that once again reinvents 70s country rock with a little slacker charm and knowing 21st-century irreverence.
“Given the chance, Teddy and the Rough Riders will unite the hippies and the cowboys, the bikers and the stoners,” Margo Price once said, and it feels like we’re one step closer to that happening.
Teddy and the Rough Riders are on a non-stop tour this summer, backing and opening for New West artist Emily Nenni across the U.S. and throughout parts of Europe and the U.K., culminating in their official showcase at this year’s Americanafest in September. Following a short run of dates with Emily Nenni opening for Orville Peck, The Teddy gents will set out on their own U.S. tour beginning in October through the end of 2024, with dual album release celebrations in Austin and Nashville.
