Dolly Parton has turned down the opportunity to have a statue erected outside the Tennessee State Capitol.
The legendary singer thanked fans and the Tennessee legislature for their consideration of a bill to have the statue erected, saying she was “honoured and humbled” by the gesture.
However she asked them to remove the bill from consideration. “Given all that is going on in the World, I don’t think putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time”.
She went on to say that sometime down the line, perhaps after she’s gone, she’s certain she will stand proud on the Capitol grounds if people think she still deserves it.
She concluded by saying “In the meantime, I’ll continue to try to do good work to make this great state proud”.
Besides all of her musical accolades, Parton has done a lot of charity work in her home state, including setting up the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and most recently donating over one million dollars to fund research into the Covid 19 vaccine.
Parton grew up in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, her father used to clean the statue of her that stood in her hometown.
