Fast-rising country star Conner Smith has announced a new EP is on its way.
With the release, titled The Storyteller, the 'Take It Slow' singer promises "5 brand new songs, 5 different stories" will arrive on Friday, Oct. 4.
The Tennessee native has been busy this year, staking his claim on the country charts and quickly rising through the ranks of the genre's buzziest hitmakers. The forthcoming project marks his second EP of 2024 and a follow-up to his full-length debut album, Smoky Mountains, which dropped back in January.
The Storyteller is bound showcase Smith's penchant for a good country story song, giving the young artist the opportunity to flex his songcraft and add to the genre's vast catalogue of narrative tunes.
This is something he attempted with Smoky Mountains as a whole earlier this year, telling Holler his vision for the record was to craft an all-encompassing tale with its dozen tracks.
"I wanted the record to tell a story," he explained in an exclusive interview. "I didn't want every song to have to be a massive radio hit, I wanted to have some songs on there that simply make the other songs better, and that aren't for radio, they're just for the fan”.
He went on to explain that classic country story songs are the ones that have always captivated him.
“I grew up on that early 2000s sound," he shared. "‘There Goes My Life’ and ‘The Good Stuff’ [by Kenny Chesney], ‘Just to See You Smile’ [by Tim McGraw], ‘Three Wooden Crosses’ [by Randy Travis] and ‘Tattoos On This Town’ [by Jason Aldean] - those are real storytelling country songs, and that's my favourite type of songwriting."
Of those standards, the way they evoke such complex feelings alongside their intricate narratives, he added, "That is so profound, and so hard to do."
Come October, we'll likely see Smith undertake such an endeavor with The Storyteller.
